Windows XP Pro x64
JOE 12/8/2008 9:31:07 PM
Just got off phone with three differant divisions of Microsoft and it was
suggested I come here and post a question.In 2005 I hade a TechNet
subscription I recieved a disk for Evaluation purposes for WIN XP PRO x64.At
the time it was for the TITANIUM processor only,I am building a new system
with the Intel Dual-Core E8500 3.16ghz with an ASUS P5Q-PRO all of wich will
support 64-bit.The system will be for testing purposes only since I plan on
building around the realease of the public beta version of WINDOWS 7 .Will
this disk work as a clean install or not no-one sofar seems to know. This disk
has never benn used, activated,or anything else all it has done is stayed in
the sleeve. Can someone answer this I don't want to build the system on the
assumption that I have a 64bit OS ready to install if it will not work and I
have to supply another 64bit OS

I assume you mean 'Itanium'.

If the version you have was designed for Itanium only ...
then my guess would be that that's exactly what it's for. Itanium only.

I guess it would not hurt to try it, but I suspect you will have to go and
get another version

Philo is correct - if the disk says Itanium or is called "Windows XP for
64-bit Processors", then it is for a completely different architecture and
won't work. The correct designation for Windows XP for the mobo and
processor you have is "Windows XP Professional x64 Edition". If it doesn't
say that, it isn't the one you want.

XP x64 is not being actively developed or supported well by many current
hardware manufacturers. You're likely to have better luck finding drivers
and supported peripherals for Vista 64.

Note also that evaluation means time limited. I don't know what the time
limit is, but it's likely 90 or 120 days. Do NOT let the evaluation time
elapse - recovery is far harder. Install the real version before the
evaluation elapses to maintain full availability to your data and PC.
