Ok, before I surrender completely and rebuild this machine using 32 bit Vista, I'm wondering if there are any folks who are having success running 32 bit apps on a 64 bit Ultimate OS. If so, I'd like to exchange notes on setup and configuration with you.
I'm running 64 bit Vista Ultimate on an Asus P5Q mobo (latest drivers from Asus download) with an Intel Q9450 CPU and 4 GB (2x2048) OCZ PC-6400 RAM. It has 3 Western Data SATA hard drives and 2 SATA optical drives and is connected to the switch/router of my home ethernet network. The graphics card is a PCI-E XFX GeForce 8800 GTS with 1024 MB running the latest nVidia GeForce driver. It has an Ultra x3 600W p/s. In BIOS, remap memory is enabled and memory hole is disabled.
From Microsoft it is running the OS, 64 bit IE7 and Office 2007. All run solid.
From Hauppage it is running 32 bit WinTV on a PVR-1800 tuner. Windows Media Center also runs over the same tuner. No problem with either.
There are two applications that rip and/or copy and/or burn DVDs (DVDFab 5 and EasyDVD) -- both are 32 bit apps.
The main app that I built it for is Pinnacle's Studio 12 video editing software. It is also a 32 bit app.
This same set of applications has run just fine for me on 32 bit XP and Vista platforms.
On this 64 bit platform however its a different story. I get abends with condition codes 5 or 374 just about every time I use Studio -- particularly if I am deleting, saving or opening files and/or projects. I've notices that after getting one of these abends with Studio, I'm likely to get the same error code when trying to start another of the 32 bit apps, including the 32 bit version of IE. The tech support folks at Pinnacle say that they have Studio 12 running just fine on a 64 bit platform.
I've uninstalled all software other than Studio. I've stopped all start-up programs. I've stopped all non-MS services. I've disabled memory remapping. I've enabled memory hole. I've removed one stick of memory. I've run prim95 for days with no errors. I've run MemTest86+ overnight with no errors.
Everything runs as solid as a rock except for these 32 bit apps.
Is anyone out there successfully running similar 32 bit apps on 64 bit Vista?
Thanks in advance for whatever insight and help you might offer,

Hi, Howard.
[Quoted Text] > Is anyone out there successfully running similar 32 bit apps on 64 bit > Vista?
Not sure what qualifies as "similar 32 bit apps", but I've been running Vista Ultimate x64 almost exclusively since it came out of beta 2 years ago. I have almost no 64-bit apps, so almost everything I run is 32-bit. I do not run Studio (don't even know what it is, really), but I do run Photoshop Elements 6.0; is that "similar"?
Other 32-bit apps that I run include the Microsoft Office 2007 suite, but I'm not a heavy user of Office anymore. Just a little Word, Outlook and Excel, plus occasional Publisher, Project, Access. And Quicken 2007 Deluxe. Both Google Earth and Virtual Earth. And several others. I have 2 tuners (Hauppauge HVR-1600 and Pinnacle PCTV HD ProStick), Both work with Media Center, but not perfectly because I have only an antenna, no TV cable. I get only a few channels and those break up sometimes, but it's a reception problem, not a software problem. I'm strictly an amateur at audio/video, but I did manage to capture a 1-hour program, using MC, and then edit it with Movie Maker and create a DVD-ROM that we can watch on our living room TV.
Are you having problems with apps other than Studio?
