Sometimes it's so bad the machine has to be formatted and re-loaded.

Definitely. Viruses are designed to do damage. If one has enough time to do its stuff before someone tries to remove it, the result of the damage will be that it is unremovable.
Your goal should be to stop *getting* infected by a virus, not just to remove it after getting infected.

That would mean the repair shop successfully removed the virus. ;-)

I've encountered CMOS viruses that have flashed the BIOS rendering the motherboard inoperable.

There is one that stops your fan from working, making your PC over heat, and completely burn out. So if you ever don't hear the whining the PC usually makes. Panic.........

In your earlier thread "How can I get rid of a virus" you asked, "How can I get rid of a virus on a computer without taking it to the repair shop or downloading anything."
Then, "How do computer repair shops remove a virus?"
Now this. I'd repeat my earlier response: What exactly is the problem you are trying to solve, and in what ways has it not been addressed by earlier responses to your original question?
Or are you just wanting to hang around here nattering about viruses?

No kidding? Got any references or virus names at all? I can't find anything yet on Google or Yanoo and I'd like to know more about it.

Probably doing a paper of some kind, or just a troll of sorts. I vote some kind of troll from the absence of any kind of supporting explanation.

Ultimately, the answer is no, because sometimes the shortest route to a clean system is a clean re-install, and the formatting that this starts from will remove anything.
The tricks are, being able to recognise when that is the prudent course (somewhat akin to knowing when to stop putting money into a car) and, how to avoid re-infecting the system from the backups.

sounds like an urban ledged to me...this might have happened 10 years ago to an Intel processor or 5 for an AMD, but today both CPU's have over rides that will shut down the processor when overheating is sensed.
