Wireless card connects locally, but not to net
bunnerl <guest[ at ]unknown-email.com> 10/3/2008 1:44:47 PM
Just installed a Dynex wireless G card on brand new gateway with vista home premium x64. I can connect to the local network, but I cannot connect to the internet. Other computer (running vista 32bit) can connect to both the network and internet fine. I am really stumped on this one, any help would be VERY appreciated -- bunnerl

You should go to the Command Prompt and enter IPconfig /all on both
machines. You might find that the machine that cannot access the
Internet is not using a valid IP like the machine that has a good
connection.

If the IP starts with 169, then that's a default IP that is assigned to
the NIC by the O/S indicating that there is some kind of trouble, and
the machine timed out trying to get an IP from the DHCP server on the
LAN. It's a sign of a misconfiguration or defectiveness issues on the
NIC or on the router, if the router is the DHCP server on the LAN.

If it's the 169 IP for the NIC, then that IP can share resources with
other machines on the LAN, but the IP will not let the machine access
the Internet, since it's not using a valid IP on the router.

The IP could be zero and the machine has no connection to the router,
but in either case of the IP being used by the machine and even though
there 100% signal strength between the wireless NIC and WAP, there is no
valid IP being used and no valid connection to the Internet.

thanks for the idea, but when i went to check the settings on both machines, neither had 169 in the IP. the IP for the working machine is 192.168.1.136, and for the nonworking is 192.168.1.100. Both machines have the same default gateway and other credentials, but for some reason i cannot get the .100 to connect. Any other ideas? thanks -- bunnerl

As I recall, there was some registry setting some user I was helping
with on wireless and Vista that came back and said he found a setting
that he made that had to do with Winsock as I kind of recall that
corrected the problem, and he was able to get to the Internet. You might
want to check with Vista Networking group about some kind of setting.

Also some have said that they have corrected wireless connections to the
Internet by adjusting the MTU settings on the router, which can also be
done on the NIC too I think.

Thank you for all your help. What I think was the problem was that the wireless card does not have drivers for x64 vista. I fixed it by swapping the wireless cards between the two machines, with the other card being supported in x64. So im online and happy. thank you again for your help -- bunnerl
