DVD ROM and RW drives not working
cdennehy2000 <cdennehy2000.3986f60[ at ]pcbanter.net> 12/24/2008 10:31:59 PM
On my dell xps 400 deskton, running windows xp, I regrettably made the mistake of trying to load old Roxio Adaptec Easy CD Creator 4.02d-d5 software from an original dell disk i had from my old windows ME.... I uninstalled the program, but two obsolete drivers remain on my computer:

cdralw2k.sys
cdr4_2k.sys

i tried deleting these drivers from the hard drive, but still the dvd drives are not showing up in my computer. save restoring my pc to original factory settings, can anyone please recommend a fix for this problem that will permit me to once again use my DVD drives?

thanks,

chris -- cdennehy2000

Might be worth a try to do a system restore
to a time before you installed the Roxio
software.

And...maybe the following article would be
worth a look:

(314060) You can no longer access the CD
drive or the DVD drive, or you receive an error
message after you remove a CD recording
program or a DVD recording program in
Windows XP: "error code 31"

hi, john, thanks for the link to the microsoft guided help article -- unfortunately, i got message that "Guided Help can not be downloaded right now". To your knowledge, have you encountered problems with downloading ths program?

On restoring my computer to an earlier point -- prior to loading the program in question, the restore facility for some reason doesn't give me an option to go back prior to this event. Not sure why. any ideas on that?

thanks,
chris -- cdennehy2000

I have no idea why you cannot download Guided Help.
I guess you could try the manual instructions.

Choose any restore point that is before the time when
the problems with your optical drives began.

This problem is still ongoing. I'm eager to try the suggested Microsoft Guided Help facility; however, despite repeated attempts, the program will not run. I've tried on two different computers, but no luck, getting as far as the box in which it asks you whether you want to run on "this computer" or "another computer". After this, I get a message... "Guided Help cannot be downloaded now". Anybody else encounter this problem?

thanks,

chris
