Hi,
I installed SP3 successfully on my old computer that has 1 working drive.
However, on my new Dell XPS 410 computer I'm running RAID 0 and SP3 blue-screened -- both in Normal Mode and in Safe Mode. I had to do a Repair Install of SP2 to get my computer up then reinstall IE7 to get online (IE6 wouldn't work after that).
Any ideas? Dell support has not clue why this is happening. I'm really worried Microsoft might force SP3 onto my machine again at some point and override my Automatic Updates settings like they did with SP2 (thankfully that worked out ok).
[NOTE: Also, please -- whoever recommended that I reformat my HD last time I posted something -- please do not respond to this note. I was not, did not and am not going to do that. Thanks in advance.]

Without the contents of the BSOD it is pretty hard for us to know what is going on, let alone even try to give you any advice.

You got a BSOD immediately after having installed WinXP SP3 on this machine, or the new machine came with WinXP SP3 preinstalled and you started getting BSODs?
Is this machine-in-question now running WinXP SP2?
After you did the Repair Install, in what way was IE6 "not working"?
What anti-virus application or security suite is installed and is your subscription current? What anti-spyware applications (other than Defender)? What third-party firewall (if any)? Were any of these applications running in the background when you installed SP3 and/or IE7?
Has a Norton or McAfee application ever been installed on this machine?
Last but not least, what STOP error(s) is/are being seen when you get the BSODs?
ABOUT WIN XP SP3 & AUTOMATIC UPDATES (AU):
• No matter how you have AU configured, SP3 will NOT install without your approval.
• If you select AU's "Notify Only" settings, SP3 will not even download (let alone install) without your approval; cf. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/306525

Why is it you're the ONLY one stating this problem? Millions have installed SP3 without problems. Are we to believe you? "BigPecs8" <Bigpecs8[ at ]kissmybutt.com.invalid> wrote in message news:4959c9f4$0$11331$9a6e19ea[ at ]unlimited.newshosting.com...

For those too dim-witted to read and comprehend, the problem does and has existed for quite some time.
With security Update KB960714, the previous flaws in ethernet/network drivers w/OS WinXP SP3 became more pronounced and, in a cascading effect, has caused computers to enter the dreaded "Boot Loop". The response from MicroSoft is drivers MAY NOT be SP3 compatible particularly if hardware manufacturers did not choose to have them tested by MicroSoft.
This MS Security Update was released 17Dec08, updated 18Dec08. Take days off for Christmas, weekends and it's easy to see that this KB960714 hasn't quite made the circuit, been installed and pointed out failures. Give it time.
Quoting MicroSoft "The network adapter drivers available in Intel's Pro100/1000 .... software are NOT COMPATIBLE with WinXP SP3." Or would you prefer someone tatoo that on your forehead?
But these aren't NEW drivers. Some of these Intel drivers go back to 2004. So backwards engineering will not work!
But don't believe me. Telephone Intel Tech Support and ask them if their network/ethernet adapter drivers are XP SP3 compatible. Phone number available on their website.
Their response is a lulu. "We have never stated that our drivers were SP3 compliant." And they won't admit they aren't either. Their respone is so politically correct to be a true non-response.

Sources?
At present, there exist no "sources" but an "absence" of sources.
Intel's response is very clever. They aren't stating that their drivers are or are not WinXP SP3 compliant. What they are saying is that they have never said anything! Clever.
MicroSoft has flatly stated that network drivers from applicable Intel software "have not been certified and are, at present, incompatible with SP3." They also dodge the issue by saying "we've never claimed that they were compatible."
"It all depends on what your definition of 'is' is."

The few SP3 problems are details on the MS site, along with how to work around them. Your diatribe is just that; silly and a sour grapes attitude.
I've never beein in a boot-loop. And I don't dread it. They only "may not ... " becuase they didn't pay MS their "fees" to declare it so. Nearly all non-MS ware is in that same situation. The 17 Dec update distribution HAS been completed. I have in installed here. I use Intel's Pro 100 hw/sw. NO problems, EVER, with it. Drivers being "SP3 compatible" is simply a pay-scheme for MS to make money. It is compatible. Distributing computers do not recognize weekends, holidays, etc., and even users as a rule don't by more than a day or so. Backwards engineering is irrelevant; it works well on several machines Iv'e seen. Have not yet seen one it didn't work on.
Intel's
[Quoted Text] > Pro100/1000 .... software are NOT COMPATIBLE with WinXP SP3." :
Wherever you got that from you need to recheck it or relegate them to a never-visit. Or learn to quote properly.
Telephone support often "writes off" simpletons who call them; that's not just Intel. I can just imagine your conversational style.
You are totally and completely wrong. If you followed the MS instructions for installing SP3, which includes having a problem free machine, SP3 with two exceptions that MS provides workarounds for, will work perfectly first time every time.
Dont' let the door hit you on the ass ...
