How much RAM memory?
Try Ctrl+Alt+Delete to select Task Manager and click the Performance Tab. Under Commit Charge what is the Total, the Limit and the Peak?
Are there any problems indicated in the System and Application logs?
Please post copies of all Error and Warning Reports appearing in the System and Application logs in Event Viewer relating to the last boot in normal mode . No Information Reports or Duplicates please. Indicate which also appear in a previous boot.
You can access Event Viewer by selecting Start, Control Panel, Administrative Tools, and Event Viewer. When researching the meaning of the error, information regarding Event ID, Source and Description are important.
A tip for posting copies of Error Reports! Run Event Viewer and double click on the error you want to copy. In the window, which appears is a button resembling two pages. Click the button and close Event Viewer. Now start your message (email) and do a paste into the body of the message. Make sure this is the first paste after exiting from Event Viewer.

Several points:
1. Please don't yell at us by typing in capitals
2. Please describe your computer, especially its hardware--what CPU, how much RAM, etc.
3. How long have you had the computer?
4. How long have you been having this problem? Is it new or has it always been there since you got it?
5. If it's new, when did it start, especially with relation to something else you may have done or installed?
6. Exactly how slow is "super slow"? Please put a number on it, even if an approximate one.
7. Is it slow doing everything, or just booting?
8. What programs do you have starting automatically when you power on? Run the msconfig program to see a list of them.
9. What anti-virus and anti-spyware programs do you run, and are they all kept up-to-date?

This is a Windows XP newsgroup. The presumption is therefore that the operating system is Windows XP.

Hello, I hope nobody minds if I hijack this post since the original poster did not reply
I have a similar problem with a slow computer First I would like to say that I am somewhat new to XP since I have been using windows 98 most of the time The first thing I want to solve is the slow boot I installed windows xp pro on an amd based comuter running at 1ghz with 128mb ram This is on a 20 gb hard drive that is dual booted with windows xp From the very begining before adding any software it takes 2 minutes to fully boot into xp window Is there a different version of xp installed on the desktop than the laptop ? Does the ram make any difference ?
Because I have a laptop with 700mhz and 64 mb ram with windows 98 and xp (from a different cd) also dual booted and it takes only about 30-40 seconds the same as windows 98 So why is it booting slower on a faster pc with more memory ? I would be happy to answer any question anyone has in order to solve this problem

128 mb RAM is insufficient to run Windows XP notwithstanding your experience with your laptop.
What Windows XP updates have been applied to each computer. What anti-virus and anti-spyware programmes are installed on each computer?
With 128 mb RAM you will find that the system is over reliant on using the pagefile
Try Ctrl+Alt+Delete to select Task Manager and click the Performance Tab. Under Commit Charge what is the Total, the Limit and the Peak?

How much RAM you need for adequate performance on Windows XP depends on what apps you run, but 128MB is nowhere near enough for anybody. Everybody needs at least 256MB, and even that isn't enough for many people. A typical minimum amount is 512MB.
> This is on a 20 gb hard drive
That's much too small for almost everyone.
> that is dual booted with windows xp > From the very begining before adding any software it takes 2 minutes to > fully boot into xp window
Two minutes is neither unusual nor particularly slow. My personal view is that the attention many people pay to how long it takes to boot is unwarranted. Assuming that the computer's speed is otherwise satisfactory, it may not be worth worrying about, especially when it's only two minutes. Most people start their computers once a day or even less frequently. In the overall scheme of things, even a few minutes to start up isn't very important. Personally I power on my computer when I get up in the morning, then go get my coffee. When I come back, it's done booting. I don't know how long it took to boot and I don't care.
However if you do want to address it, it may be because of what programs start automatically, and you may want to stop some of them from starting that way. On each program you don't want to start automatically, check its Options to see if it has the choice not to start (make sure you actually choose the option not to run it, not just a "don't show icon" option). Many can easily and best be stopped that way. If that doesn't work, run MSCONFIG from the Start | Run line, and on the Startup tab, uncheck the programs you don't want to start automatically.
However, if I were you, I wouldn't do this just for the purpose of running the minimum number of programs. Despite what many people tell you, you should be concerned, not with how *many* of these programs you run, but *which*. Some of them can hurt performance severely, but others have no effect on performance.
Don't just stop programs from running willy-nilly. What you should do is determine what each program is, what its value is to you, and what the cost in performance is of its running all the time. You can get more information about these with google searches and asking about specifics here.
Once you have that information, you can make an intelligent informed decision about what you want to keep and what you want to get rid of.
> Is there a different version of xp installed on the desktop than the laptop?
What laptop and desktop? If you have two computers this is the first you've said of it. And how do you expect someone here to know whether the two are different versions?
> Does the ram make any difference ?
Of course. It can make a giant difference in speed. As I said, 128MB is nowhere near enough.
> Because I have a laptop with 700mhz and 64 mb ram with windows 98 and xp > (from a different cd) also dual booted and it takes only about 30-40 seconds > the same as windows 98 > So why is it booting slower on a faster pc with more memory ?
Speeds depend on what you what have running, not just on the hardware.

For some reason the reply after my post is not showing up after I signed in Anyway thanks for the replies I think it was very helpful On the comit charge the total is 82k the limit is 274k and the peak is 84k What is the significance of that ?
On the ram I think that may be the problem since I double checked the ram on the laptop it's actually 256mb so I gues that explains why the laptop is booting faster I know I upgraded the ram in the laptop a few years ago but I forgot it was that high
So I guess I have to get more memory for the pc Thanks for the help

What is the significance of that ? It means that since the computer was booted the system was not over dependent on use of the pagefile. This i not what I expected. However the be certain you are getting typical figures you need to test over a period of normal usage.
Have a look in the System and Application logs in Event Viewer for Errors and Warnings and post copies here. Don't post any more than 48 hours ago.
You can access Event Viewer by selecting Start, Control Panel, Administrative Tools, and Event Viewer. When researching the meaning of the error, information regarding Event ID, Source and Description are important.

Gerry, I installed sp2 thinking that it may run better but it did not make any difference I also disabled the firewall and I am not running any anti spyware but that did not make any difference either Here are a couple of lines from the event log 12/24/2008 11:24:18 AM RemoteAccess Warning None 20169 N/A Unable to contact a DHCP server. The Automatic Private IP Address will be assigned to dial-in clients. Clients may be unable to access resources on the network.
12/24/2008 11:22:28 AM Dhcp Warning None 1007 N/A Your computer has automatically configured the IP address for the Network Card with network address . The IP address being used is
I had some disk errors last month when I first installed xp but nothing recently I think the event viewer is used after xp is up and running so I don't think it can help to see what is happening while it's booting It's probably like you said not enough memory I am currently shopping around for that

Disabling the Windows Firewall is unwise.
What anti-virus software is installed?
If you intend to connect the computer to the internet it is essential that you have anti-virus and anti-spyware programmes installed with a firewall enabled. If you miss out on any of these you will soon be overun by malware and the computer rendered unusable. You can obtain perfectly adequate freeware programmes to keep your system protected.
Updating to SP2 would not improve your system performance but it improves security and eliminates bugs in the software.
The Event Viewer reports are of no great consequence but they could indicate a system under pressure.
A boot process taking 2 minutes is actually not slow. It may take longer with security software installed but that is essential.
What is the computer make and model?

I don't know this site is very busy or there is something wrong with it Every time I try to login it says service temporarily unavailable Is this thread closed maybe ?
Gerry, I am not running any anti spyware programs I have been using windows 98 for years and did not have any problems Hopefully xp is the same I mostly stick to known sites and I am not downloading any files unless I really need it If I can get it down to 40 seconds like the laptop I will be satisfied
This is a no name brand pc I built myself It has a pc266 motherboard m810 series with an amd Athalon 1ghz cpu I would probably be still using it today if I hadn't upgraded to a newer pc I only upgraded that to xp because some of the new programs only work with xp and I could not use it otherwise I didn't want to install xp on the newer pc until I am more comfortable using it and work out any bugs or tweak it until I like it
