Hi,
My copy of Windows has been validated for 2 years. I haven't received an update notification for the past week so I went to the update site. I received a message that said 'Windows Update has encountered an error and cannot display the requested page.' Is there a known reason for this and what can I do to fix it? -- Denise

Denise, Try this http://support.microsoft.com/kb/883614/en-us Also here http://www.annoyances.org/exec/forum/winxp/t1104051410 there is this simple solution start -> run
regsvr32 MSXML3.dll

If the other suggestions don't work, you can try System Restore.

Hi Carlos,
Thanks for replying.
I tried start -> run, typed regsvr32 MSXML3.dll, but it didn't help.
I also started Background Intelligent Transfer Service and set it on Manual.
Windows Internet Explorer 7 is in Add/Remove Programs.
Any other ideas besides a Repair? I just formatted about a month ago and everything was working great. -- Denise

Hi Denise,
Have you run a Chkdsk /r or Chkdsk with both options checked?
Have you tried clicking refresh to see if that has any effect?
Have you updated your Adobe Flash Player?

I did a System Restore to two points, the oldest and one in the middle but neither helped. Thanks for your suggestion. -- Denise

I ran chkdsk /f and chkdsk /r but neither helped. I opened Adobe and had it search for updates but none were available. Refreshing didn't help. When I went into my Update History, it said that I haven't received any updates. I've received a lot of updates.
Also, F-Secure Support pages F-Secure Online Virus Scanner will no longer work. I think they might be tied into the same problem and need the same fix.

I also ran Microsoft Malicious Software Removal Tool and it found no problems. I also ran MalwareBytes, SUPERAntiSpyware, Ad-Aware and aVast!. None of them found anything more than cookies. I haven't been having any other problems with my computer. -- Denise

Last week, I installed Java 6 Update 10 and Adobe Shockwave Player 11. Would either of these programs be causing the problem?
Also, I use aVast! Windows Security Center doesn't recognize it so I checked the box that I would monitor it on my own. For the past 2 years, it recognized it. It stopped recognizing it about two weeks ago. I uninstalled aVast! and reinstalled it but it didn't help. Windows Security Center still doesn't recognize it. -- Denise

Denise, You will have to think hard what events happened two weeks ago. Did you install any new software/hardware? Something happened in that crucial week that is causing all these troubles. Can you do a System Restore to, let's say, three weeks ago? Carlos

Hi Carlos,
The only programs that I installed to use when needed were Last week, I installed Java 6 Update 10 and Adobe Shockwave Player 11.
I was having problems with videos . . . they were choppy, and my computer was very sluggish when transferring files. I went to WhatTheTech Forum and they asked me to download and install some testing programs . . . PC PitStop, 3DMark05 Test, HD Tune Test, What's Running, ATF-Cleaner, Look In My PC, and CodeStuff Starters. All of these test programs have been uninstalled.
I also disabled cftmon.exe, removed the checkmark/tick to turn off Indexing, I ensured that DMA was chosen, and disabled the DNS Client service. When I undid these changes, it made no difference. I still couldn't download updates and Microsoft still shows that I've never received any updates.
Could it have anything to do with my IP address? The reason I'm asking is because some people have told me that my IP address is different.

Hi Juergen . . . thanks for your help.
How are batch files made?

Denise, Batch files are simply text files that contain commands. Just create an empty text file with Notepad. Name it, let's say, "Denise.txt" Open it, copy the 7 lines containing "regsvr32.exe..." in http://support.microsoft.com/kb/555989/en-us and paste them into "Denise.txt" Save "Denise.txt" and exit. Rename "Denise.txt" to "Denise.bat". There you have your Batch file.
Right-click on it and choose "Run as Administrator".

My question is in upper case for 5. It says:
1. Create a batch file and copy the following contents in it and then double click on it to register modules. regsvr32 c:\windows\system32\vbscript.dll regsvr32 c:\windows\system32\mshtml.dll regsvr32 c:\windows\system32\msjava.dll regsvr32 c:\windows\system32\jscript.dll regsvr32 c:\windows\system32\msxml.dll regsvr32 c:\windows\system32\actxprxy.dll regsvr32 c:\windows\system32\shdocvw.dll
2. Restart the Windows Update and Automatic service 3. Stop the Cryptographic Service 4. Remove the folder \Windows\System32\Catroot2 5. Rename the \Windows\SoftwareDistribution folder. < WHAT NAME SHOULD I GIVE IT? This above folder is the restoration point for Windows Update service. 6. Now restart the Cryptographic Service.
5. Rename the \Windows\SoftwareDistribution folder.

Name it anything. Just add an x to the name. You want a new one created and still be able to restore this one if a problem develops.

While you are waiting for solutions here, you should always start an incident with Microsoft. They provide excellent free help for update problems.

Here are some thoughts:
First off, do you use any third party security software such a Norton or a firewall such as Zone Alarm?
If so, there might be settings that are blocking access. Such settings can be hard to pin down... but can at least sometimes be elimintated or verified as a source of problems by disabling the application temporarily.
On the other hand... and alternative would be to go to the Windows update catalog... then download the individual updates and apply manually.
Finally there is the option of performing a repair install... but that's a bit drastic and I'd only do so as a least resort... and only after backing up all data!

I just did a Repair Install of Windows and I still can't get updates. When I tried to get IE7 installed, a message popped up that said that it's not for my computer. I have XP Pro x64. My Windows Disk has SP2 on it. I've made two claims with Microsoft since Thursday but I haven't received a response. I tried general fixes that are recommended, i.e., change Registry Values, uninstall anti-virus program and replaced it with a different one, ran a battery of tests to make sure that my pc doesn't have any malware/viruses/trojans/hijackers, and none were found. If anyone has any other ideas, please let me know. -- Denise

1. There are both 32-bit & 64-bit versions of IE7. If you're being told the one you have is not for your computer, then you downloaded the wrong version. You need the one that's for Windows Server 2003 x64 and/or Windows XP Pro x64.
2. The Windows XP Pro x64 install CD does not have SP2 on it unless you got a copy that was Slipstreamed. Win XP Pro x64 is distributed on a CD that is at SP1 level and SP2 has to be installed separately. You have to be sure you have the correct edition of SP2 since there are both 32-bit versions and 64-bit versions. The 64-bit SP2 is distributed as being for Windows Server 2003 x64.

If that's the case, I no longer have SP2 installed, along with all the other security updates that I need. I tried to install IE7 for x64, not x32. It wouldn't install. -- Denise

Then I would recommend saving data you need off the system and doing a clean install of Win x64, being sure to do a complete format of the drive when asked.

Bobby, what if you have your factory image on your drive, in other words instead of recovery disks they partitioned the drive and placed it there. Won't you erase that if you format the drive?
Thanks

I can't answer for all systems, but on my Dell laptop there are 2 partitions that are hidden and the re-install disc only shows the system partition and gives me the option of a quick format or a full format.
You'll have to check with the manufacturer/vendor of your system to get the correct answer for your specific case.
However, Denise has specified in previous posts that she has re-installed her system on more than one occasion so I would speculate she is not dealing with this type situation.

I went to a lot of MS sites yesterday and read up on reasons where MS Updates will no longer update. Most people were able to receive the updates but they wouldn't install, so I had a lot of sifting to do. I also don't have Vista so that let out a lot of information also.
In Services, I put everything on Automatic and Started. The only one that wouldn't start was Automatic Updates. Error 1083: The Executable Program that this service is configures to run in does not implement the service. The service is not started."
Since I did a Repair of Windows, one would think that whatever service is needed would have been installed, but evidently it wasn't.
I was able to download SP1 but when it started to install, I received a message that it was already installed.
I downloaded SP 2 for XP Pro x64 and it installed, so in that area, I'm doing ok. I might be able to manually download and install updates but I don't know which ones I need. In Add/Remove Programs, there are a number of updates. I can only think that they were downloaded with SP2.
I was also able to download and install IE7 for x64 after I installed SP2.
I tried stopping BITS but I received a messaged (to paraphrase) BITS wasn't started and couldn't be started.
It seems that my problem has to do with WUAUENG1.dll. I put it in a batch file with other dll's and all the other installed (or whatever they do) but WUAUENG1.dll wouldn't. I received another message that said "The Automated Update service is not stared. Could not start the Automatic UIpdates on Local Computer."
I'm not connected via a proxy server. I have Comcast.
I don't have any hidden partitions. I have a 300G hdd and all but about 1G isn't accounted for.
This is where everything stands right now. I'll be doing more digging to see if I can come up with something else. I think that getting SP2 and IE7 to install was a a good step in the right direction. All I need now is to get Auto Updates to work.

The first link was Installer Cleanup utility. It was very vague. It didn't seem that it would clean up leftover remnants but entire programs, so I chose not to use it.
The second link gave me a very good laugh. I chose to download and install Windows6.0-KB942288-v2-x64.msu
After it downloaded, I tried to install it. I received a message that MS didn't recognize the file type (paraphrasing again) and I was sent to this site:
"File Type: Unknown
Description: Windows does not recognize this file type.
You may search the following Web site for related software and information: .. . ."

I don't know what geve you the impression that it removed entire programs. This is a relevant excerpt from the page; /Begin quote You can use the utility to remove installation information for programs that were installed by using Windows Installer. Be aware that Windows Installer CleanUp Utility will not remove the actual program from your computer. However, it will remove the installation files so that you can start the installation, upgrade, or uninstall over. /End quote
Note, "Windows Installer CleanUp Utility will not remove the actual program ....."
Regardless, you must do as you see fit.

By your reply, I take it that you intend readers to assume that, because you do not have WUAUENG1.dll, you also do not have wuaueng.dll. Through the years of answering posts here and other newsgroups, I have learned to try to make as few assumptions as possible. Thus, I asked a direct question to which you provided an indirect answer. OK. I will now infer that you do not have wuaueng.dll either. [They are actually the same file under a different name; however, I'm not going into installer behavior here].
At his point, I would completely remove the operating system partition and reinstall from the installation media or known good image or backup.
Alternately, I would suggest a repair install on top of the present one except that would probably leave you still unable to get updates. There is an advantage though. The operating system is now in a well-defined state and the fix for it in that circumstance is given in an MSKB article.
Good luck. --

A few days ago, I contacted MS Help. These are the instructions I received. I followed them but they failed and I still can't start Updates:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
1. Click Start, Run, type: notepad C:\AU.reg and press Enter. Choose Yes when you are prompted.
2. Copy the following text and then paste them into the opened Notepad window:
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

4. Click Start, click Run, type in REGEDIT and press Enter.
5. Locate the following key by clicking the PLUS(+) sign:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\wuauserv
6. If this key exists, please right click it and select Delete.
7. Double click C:\AU.reg to import the registry key and select OK.
8. Restart your computer.
I appreciate your understanding that it may take some time to troubleshoot this issue. I truly hope the problem can be resolved by our mutual efforts. Thanks for your patience and cooperation.

It surprises me that MS doesn't readily know the reason for and the resolution of this problem.
I'm going to wait until MS has run out of suggestions prior to doing a format. I just formatted my pc about 4 to 5 weeks ago. I had no problems getting updates until I installed and uninstalled several diagnostic programs. I believe that one of them, when uninstalled, caused this problem.

That is something you should tell them. I draw you attention to this information in their message to you, "I appreciate your understanding that it may take some time to troubleshoot this issue. I truly hope the problem can be resolved by our mutual efforts.
Thanks for your patience and cooperation."
I agree that in might prove worthwhile to go through the process with them before resorting to the more extreme step I suggested of partition removal and re-installation.
Good luck. --

This problem is resolved.
This problem started because of wups. I decided to manually chose updates and install them, only ones that I knew were for my os. The more MS/Windows programs/files that I successfully installed, the problem with wups eventually disappeared. Then I started having a problem with wuaueng.dll. It seemed like there was no resolution to the problem because I have XP Pro x64. As I read through many sites, I found that solutions were only available for 32-bit systems, Vista and Server 2003. I had contacted MS and the fixes that I was given didn't work. I had installed the update for Windows Installer and that seemed to make matters worse, however, I couldn't uninstall it.
I think it was by luck or divine intervention that I found the solution at http://www.microsoft.com/communities/newsgroups/en-us/default.aspx?dg=microsoft.public.windowsupdate&tid=993fbbbb-d5a3-4e52-b687-74c0e21823ee&cat=&lang=&cr=&sloc=&p=1.
It description of the site is, 'Updates are not installed successfully from Windows Update, from Microsoft Update, or by using Automatic Updates after you perform a new Windows XP installation or you repair a Windows XP installation." This is because the wups file was included in the Repair or format. (explained below)
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/943144
'This problem occurs because of how the Windows XP repair operation replaces Windows system files. When you repair a Windows installation by using a Windows XP CD, the repair operation performs both of the following operations: It replaces all the Windows system files with the corresponding files from the CD.
Note This includes the Windows Update files. It restores the Windows registry. The latest version of Windows Update includes a file that was not available in the release version of Windows XP. This file is named Wups2.dll. Therefore, after the repair operation is complete, the following situation exists: The Wups2.dll file remains on the computer. The registry entries that correspond to this file are missing. Because the registry files that correspond to the Wups2.dll file are missing, update installations are unsuccessful.'
I was able to get MS/Windows Updates again. Unfortunately, after all were installed, I lost connection to the internet and couldn't create another connection (I'm on my daughter's computer now). I contacted my isp and we ran a number of tests and I was told that my network card is bad.
It never just rains . . . it pours!
I thought that I'd post the solution to this problem so that other people who have the same problem can go to these sites and get a quick solution. -- Denise

How are you connected to the Internet through the Network Card? Wired or Wirelessly?
Reinstall the Network Card Drivers, before assuming the Network Card is bad and reboot. If Wirelessly, reenter your SSID Signal Name and the passcode. It is very possible that the passcode can become corrupted.

The driver that I have is VIA Rhine Fast Ethernet Adapter. I went to VIA Technologies but I kept getting sent to driver sites that sell drivers. I decided to read some posts at forums that came with a Google search and someone said that the Hyperion Pro 4 in 1 is the same thing. I have that driver in my pc and I just installed it but I still can't connect. It says that it's looking for my network address. I'm on my daughter's computer again so I can't check out the exact words, but subnet mask is 0.0.0.0 and the other one (Gateway ?) is also. That was the reason that I was told that it was my network card. I checked the cable and looks fine, but it could just be the cable.
If anyone can give me the addy for the VIA Rhine Fast Ethernet Adapter (driver ?), I'd appreciate it.
The cable wire for the internet comes into my house and is connection to a Netgear Wireless Gateway Modem/Router Combo and the cable is connected to my computer. The wireless signal is sent to 2 computers in other parts of the house. They have internet connection.
're-enter the SSID Signal Name and the passcode.' I don't know what an SSID signal is. My isp has a WEP key number that I have but it has to be entered at my isp's site, and I'm not connected. I also know my IP address, not sure if it's the static address or not though and I can't connect to type it in the address bar.
Thanks for your thoughts :) -- Denise

The 4-in-1 package does not have the Rhine Ethernet drivers. You need to select "Ethernet (Networking/LAN/WLAN)" and then select the appropriate driver package based on what your motherboard actually has.
the URL is www.viaarena.com

Hi Bobby,
The site you recommended is the same site that I had gone to. None of the drivers there are free. The site only recommends drivers that can be purchased. I found the driver that I need but I would have had to sign up and pay for the driver. -- Denise

P.S.
If you clicked on the link from "Recommended: Click here to run a free scan for all your PCs outdated drivers (Sponsor)" it does take you to another site, but note that it plainly states "(Sponsor)" which means it is not a VIA website!

http://www.viaarena.com/default.aspx?PageID=2&OSID=2&CatID=2460 will take you directly to the "Ethernet (Networking/LAN/WLAN)" driver selection page for Windows XP 64-bit. You can alternately select Windows Server 2003 x64.

As an additional note:
Not reading carefully is exactly why people end up on malicious web sites and then wonder what happened to their computer!

Apparently my original response got lost somewhere.
The downloads from www.viaarena.com are free. I have been downloading drivers from there for years and have never paid for any of the downloads. www.viaarena.com is the support site for VIA and has always been free.
What you have done is clicked on the links for their Sponsor which takes you to a site offering too check your system and charging for their service. You need to pay more attention to what is posted on web sites and read carefully before you go clicking on links. Careless clicking on links is how unsuspecting surfers end up with malware on their computer and then wonder why things are screwed up.

'Not reading carefully is exactly why people end up on malicious web sites and then wonder what happened to their computer!'
I couldn't agree with you more. If you read my last couple of posts, I am using my daughter's computer so that a scan will do me no good. I need to find a site that will have a free download of the driver so that I can put it on a thumb drive and install it in my pc.

I clicked on the link again but found nothing. I chose South Bridge integrated VT8231, VT8233, VT8235 & VT8237 (Rhine & Rhine II), which led me here http://www.viaarena.com/default.aspx?PageID=420&OSID=2&CatID=2460&SubCatID=124
I then clicked on VT8237 and was sent here http://www.via.com.tw/en/products/chipsets/southbridge/vt8237/
There are no links to download VIA Fast Ethernet Adapter on any of the above mentioned websites.
I didn't click on links that want to sell drivers. I know better than that, and I don't appreciate you speaking to me as a child who doesn't know better. I'm internet saavy and I'm sure that I take better care of my computer than you take care of yours.
I'll go to another forum for help. Being talked down to does suit me. -- Denise

I clicked on the link to download the file. After waiting about 10 minutes, I clicked on the mirror. The mirror has nothing for Via Rhine Fast Ethernet Adapter. It's all advertisements and about the company (Via).
I've gotten the situation resolved so that this thread can be closed. Thanks for trying to help.

The 1st link you give below is not a mirror, it is the viaarena site.
Selecting "South Bridge integrated VT8231, VT8233, VT8235 & VT8237 (Rhine & Rhine II)" took me to: http://www.viaarena.com/default.aspx?PageID=420&OSID=2&CatID=2460&SubCatID=124 which is still the viaarena web site.
I clicked on the box and received 'rhine_driver_v60_via.zip', 4.8MB, almost immediately. It's a .ZIP file and it is not corrupt.
There is no scanning involved if you click on the box!

[Quoted Text] I'm not Jeff but I see a place to "Please select appropriate driver category below" which then takes you to an appropriate download page.

This takes me to a page with a link in a box whgich says "(Click image to begin download)" ujnder a link in a black-bordered box. Yes, there is a link below that to do a scan.
It might be useful to others if you indicated the source of the file you finally got.

There is a link to downloads and, in turn, to drivers. Check the ribbon on the top right of the page. --
