Can you rewrite your posting of what you are trying to do.
You are installing Vista Ultimate x64 over XP Pro x64 SP2? I would
recommend either adding a second hard drive to dual boot or backup and
do a clean install.
What are you using the 2GB stick for?

No no you got me wrong, I'm not installing it over xp i'm installing it
instead of XP you know from BIOS 1st boot device and stuff, and what I
tried to do was remove one of my 2GB ram sticks and tried to install
vista with just one 2GB ram stick connected(I saw it in another forum)
but it didnt work.
And basicly it all goes well(although slow) but everything works up
untill I get to Expanding Files and then its like 1% per hour

is your processor still set in 64 bit mode ?? have you tried a clean install instead of a upgrade ?? is your vista disk the 64 bit version?? are you sure ?? -- Joshua Randall

like I said, a clean install is what i'm trying to do.
what do you mean set to 64 bit??? its automatic once you install a 64
bit OS or isnt it??
and yea my vista is 64 bit

Did you remove everything from the drive before installing? I would
reset your CMOS to default. Check the connections on your hard drive.
Get the latest BIOS rev. Reduce RAM to 1-2 sticks.

Are you reformatting the partition you are trying to install in as part of the install? How big is the partition? Are there any other partitions with operating systems installed on the drive? Is your MOBO BIOS up to date? Is your SATA controller built into your MOBO? "tomer" <guest[ at ]unknown-email.com> wrote in message news:7da1585dc0ba6c6d90fb0dac76774449[ at ]nntp-gateway.com...

Well I did everything you said and in the CMOS the only option I saw was
to load optimized settings, nothing about default so I chose that but it
didnt work.
P.S. I installed Windows XP PRO SP2 x32 to see what the Vista upgrade
advisor has to say, and By diconnecting everything from the drive did
you mean all the physical connections??(If so thats what I did except
for the Screen, Mouse and keyboard).
Someone please help me install that damn vista!!!!

SCSIraidGURU: There is no error, it just takes ages to "Expand Files", I
left it on for 2 days and it only got to 60-70%
Curious: I already told you, I restart my comp, I press F12 to go to
boot menu then I choose CDROM and then the vista install comes up and it
takes about 5 mins or more for the Language stuff to come up then I
choose all english, "Install Now", "Custom (Advanced)......", and then
its like "please wait" for like another 5-8 mins then I enter the
product key and it takes it about a minute to continue, and then its
"Copying Files" in like a few seconds and then it takes it ages to
"Expand Files"(1%=20 mins or more).

Sorry I did not and still do not see your previous response. To the following questions I asked " Are you reformatting the partition you are trying to install in as part of the install? How big is the partition? Are there any other partitions with operating systems installed on the drive? Is your MOBO BIOS up to date? Is your SATA controller built into your MOBO? " I am surprised that when you boot from Installation DVD that you do not get a chance to select the partition to install in and that you do not get a chance to reformat the partition before the installation starts. Try a different brand DVD reader. Is this DVD a Microsoft burned or
self-burned?

Ok, my C: partition is 50 GB, and sorry I forgot to write but I do get a
chance to select a partition and yes I format the partition in the vista
installation and no I dont have multiple OS, The DVD is self-burned I
burned it in x24 speed and yea my MOBO Bios is up to date

It appears that the installation is having many problems reading the installation DVD you created? What is the source of your image and have you tried making a new copy at a slower speed? Try the original DVD. From your descriptions of your problem, your DVD drive is having difficulty reading the disk. This has nothing to do with Vista. Parts of the install process that should only take a matter of seconds, such as language selection, are taking minutes because of the disk reading difficulty. This is why you are getting 1% of expansion per hour. In the expansion process, files are copied from the DVD to the HD then expanded in sequence.
It could also be a hard drive problem, but I don't think the HD could be that slow, even in PIO mode, that's why I focused on the DVD.

I learned a long time ago to do ISO install disks at no more than 4x. I
would reburn it at 1x-4x.

32bit edition of Vista even though I got a 64bit processor

You can call Microsoft and get the 64-bit DVD for $25. It is worth it.

If you have an OEM Vista x86 product key, OEM Vista x64 will not accept the key and you will not be able to activate it. However, there are documented ways of extending the activation grace period a number of times. If you are working with retail versions, all is okay.
As far as the 64 bit CPU is concerned, 64 bit CPUs are now the norm, and systems are usually sold with 32 bit Vista, so you would have to specify that you wanted 64 bit Vista.
|
|
Microsoft will upgrade your 32-bit key to a 64-bit key. You will agree
to have them revoke your 32-bit key. I would make sure the trial
version is running on all hardware and software before doing this. It
is a pain to reverse it.

Then where are you getting the 64 bit Installation Disk image from that you are trying to copy?

Is it an ISO file? .ISO? You need to use Burn Image in Nero to burn it
for a bootable DVD. Is this how you did it.

and yea its an .ISO file

After checking the link: It certainly seems strange that you can legally download and activate a Vista release and activate it without every entering a product key and that the installation will actually work. Try is different burner. Replace the DVD drive. Install the hard
drive on a different motherboard that you know works with Vista x64 and
install it.

Well I think I figured it out, its my DVD-burner, I mean you like
sometimes when you burn a dvd or cd and then you try to read it with the
burner that burned it and it cant read it right??? well I think thats
the situation here because I tried to install vista on my sister's comp
and the language came up in seconds the only problem is that her DVD-ROM
works on ATA133 and all I have is SATA2 and IDE so now I need to buy a
DVD-ROM :/

Yea I just did and it appears that my DVD isnt the problem after all.
Anyway i'm going to the place where I bought my comp from and have them

anything else the could cause the problems I described.
I'll report back tomorrow.

Everything points to a problem reading from your drive. ATA133 is EIDE so you should be able to read from your sisters drive using your machines IDE connection.

I had a similar problem years ago with an older MS Office Suite installation disc. It was the disc. Oddly, when I made a copy of that disc, the copy worked better than the original.

Let's see...
There's nothing wrong with your hardware.
There's nothing wrong with the installation media.
