QuickRes and Display driver
"ilyaz" <ilyaz33[ at ]hotmail.com> 12/27/2008 5:27:47 PM
For a few last days, when I boot up my Windows XP Home SP3 machine, I'm
getting a mysterious message "Display driver does not support QuickRes. You
must be running a Windows 95 driver in 256 color mode or higher". After I
click on OK, everything seems normal... I tried to make some adjustments in
the Display in Control panel without any visible results...
What this QuickRes is all about? How to make it compatible with my display
driver?

Well, the story is not over, yet...
Yesterday, I downloaded and installed the xp_quickres and its icon appeared
in the notification area. I was able to adjust resolution etc. However, this
morning, after rebooting my computer, I got the same message about display
driver and the quickres icon was missing from the notification area... Am I
back to square one? What's going on?

Download and install the latest Video drivers for your
motherboard's video chip or for your AGP/PCI card.

If it's a built in video chip then get the drivers from
the motherboard manufacture's web site.
Video card, the go to the card manufacture's web site.

DO NOT use Microsoft's drivers that are available on the
Windows Update site.

Re: QuickRes and Display driver
"ilyaz" <ilyaz33[ at ]hotmail.com> 12/30/2008 5:33:23 PM
JS, if you're still watching this treat...

I have an Intel 82845G/GL/GE/PE/GV Graphics Controller. Updated driver from
Intel site. Changed a few parameters (resolutions, frequencies) - nothing
helps. Still getting the same message...

Now, I'm considering removal of QuickRes, but see no way to do it. QuickRes
is not listed in the control panel and I'm unable to find it anywhere... Any
suggestion on what do I do now?

Thanks a lot for your help.

Ilya

Re: QuickRes and Display driver

Yep, I'm still here, just stepped out for a while.

Try Autoruns from the MS Windows SysInternals site:
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb963902.aspx

AutoRuns will show/list all apps/etc. that load/run when you first boot ...
(the 'Boot Execute' tab), when you logon (the 'Logon' tab)
and other programs that load (grouped by labeled tabs)
for easy viewing.

If you don't find QuickRes listed under the above two categories
you can click on the 'Everything' tab and see if you can find it listed.

Assuming AutoRuns does show QuickRes, you then have the
ability to see the directory path where QuiceRes in installed.
Check the QuickRes folder to see if there is a file named:
uninstall.exe or unwise.exe, this file is the uninstaller.

If you do not find the above two files then you still have two
more options.

1) While still in AutoRuns simply remove (uncheck) the box
in the column labeled: 'Autorun Entry', the will stop QuickRes
from loading. You can undo any changes you have made by
placing the check mark back.

2) Also if your comfortable with editing the registry
(first - create a Restore Point) then you can double
click on the QuickRes line in AutoRuns and it will open the
registry to where the QuickRes entry is. For example a program
the loads when you logon would be located here:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINEM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurentVersion\Run
You should see the QuickRes entry list on the right side of the Registry
Editor.
Double click on the QuickRes listing an the location (Path) to
the drive location should be displayed. Deleting this registry entry
named QuickRes (right hand side of registry editor)
will remove the entry and stop QuickRes.
