Secondary Drive 1 message
Dan Drewry <dan[ at ]drewry.com> 10/20/2008 2:48:51 AM
Sometimes when I turn my Dell on (Win XP Pro) I get a message "Secondary
Drive 1 not found - press F1 to continue, F2 to run setup utility".
I have my main hard disk (C), and two CD drives (D & E). I have no idea
what it thinks my secondary drive 1 is, or why it's looking for it.
It's annoying because I turn the computer on and go away, thinking it's
going to be up and ready when I come back.

Start the computer and immediately press F2 to go into Setup. Look at the
various drives and if a second hard drive shows as an option, disable it.
Make sure you leave the first hard drive and your optical drives alone.

If that doesn't work, you may be seeing the first instances of a failing
motherboard.

Dell desktops hereabouts are preconfigured with a single
hard drive containing two logical drives, one being the
normal C:, the other a proprietary drive with backup system
and setup files, hidden during WinXP's normal operation.

Which has nothing to do with the OP's question as the BIOS doesn't detect
logical drives, only physical drives.
