You didn't state what exactly you did during the 5 hours you spent working
on recovering. I asume you can't boot to Vista and don't want to format. I
don't know what it is you did and don't want to do all over again. The
following tools should take a few minutes total and have a good chance at
being sucessful if your reason for recovery is not purely a hardware
correctable situation.
Also if you have a Vista DVD from MSFT, you increase your repair or
recovery options and odds dramatically. I don't know if you used some OEM
recovery discs, but dispite the glowing claims by the OEMs and some posters,
they fail with alarmingly high percentages and don't have near the efficacy.
I'd try the options using the Vista DVD including Startup Repair and the
Bootrec.exe tool from the command prompt accessed from the menu the DVD
provides before trying the F8 options that were available in XP and are
available in Vista.

Here is the MSKB for rebuilding the BCD using very simple quick commands
from the command prompt which you can either reach with by inserting a Vista
DVD or by tapping F8 when you start your pc and at the F8 (Windows Advancd
Options Menu) selecting "Safe Mode with Command"

You may only have to type these commands--it has helped me to fix a variety
of software no boots consistently:
bootrec /Rebuild BCD
bootrec /fixmbr
bootrec /Fixboot
In addition you can try all of the options at F8 to use system restore to
fix this as well as Last Known Good which only takes a few seconds. The
point here is that sometimes trying system restore from one of the F8 safe
modes works, when system restore from the others don't.
Since they each take only seconds to try, if the options above don't work,
I'd try them. Then you can also try (it takes a couple seconds) LKG--Last
Known Good Configuration at the F8 menu. Documentation on how to do this

The F8 options in Vista are the same as XP, and the link for Safe Mode Boot
options is labled XP by MSFT but they are the same for Vista (they haven't
updated to add Vista to the title as they have with several MSKBs that apply
to both).
Again, pressing F8 repeatedly when you seem the firmware screen may be is a
generic way to launch Windows RE on some OEM Vista computers.
You could also:

1) Safe Mode 2) Safe Mode with Cmd to Sys Restore which is simply a cmd
prompt in safe mode 3) Safe Mode with Neworking 4) LKG or Last Known Good
Configuration
Try to F8 to the Windows Adv Options Menu>try 3 safe modes there (I don't
use WGA for this purpose) and Last Known Good>then I go to Win RE in Vista.
That gives you a choice of Safe Mode, Safe Mode with Networking,and Safe
Mode with Command Prompt.

System Restore can be run from the Win RE recovery environment from the same
