Hi, Kue2.

Early beta testers have been complaining that the Vista SP2 beta is
"boring". We can't find enough bugs to make the testing interesting. ;<)

There are a few bugs, of course, but very few.

Has anything been done to cut down on the hard drive
activity? I have Vista x64 Enterprise as a standalone
system and the most annoying aspect is the constant hard
drive activity.

Or do we have to wait and see if Windows 7 does something
about this?

Hi R. C.
yes seems to be very stable,of course I was not having problems before
service pak 2 either.Vista seems to be very stable ever since the summer.
I guess most of the bug are getting ironed out.

Hi Bobby

I don't seem to experience the disk activity you do.
I'm using Vista 64 Ultimate.I do remember some people experiencing your
problem, but that was very early in the release of Vista.
I am looking forward to Windows 7.

Hugh,
Fresh installs of Vista are plagued with heavy disk activity due to the
"start-from-scratch" of the indexing and usually calms down after a few days.
Installing SP2 might be causing that of maybe it is time for Bobby to
upgrade to a bigger/faster disk!.

What size drives do I need? I presently have 2 Seagate

Bobby,
I guess I should have ended my post with a smiley so that you could
understand that I as just joking.
Those two HD's you have there are up to the task for sure.
Have you been able to pinpoint when does the hard disk shuffling/dancing
takes place?
Is it right after a boot, or inactivity, etc.?
In a nutshell, is there a patter for that activity?
Have you installed other software/hardware before/after SP2?
An interesting test would be to roll back to pre-SP2 and see if the problem
is still there in order to rule out SP2 as guilty.
If you feel the need for speed, go the RAID way with your disks.
I've been running the (dangerous but speedy) RAID-0 for two years with no
issues. No returning back!
:)

Carlos,

I haven't tried the SP2 Beta yet. I'm still at SP1 which
was installed from an Enterprise DVD with SP1 integrated.
To me it seems the activity is almost constant and has been
that way since I installed back in May or June. There are
times when the computer reacts a bit slowly and I am of the
impression it's because of the disc activity. I have a
Biostar TA770 A2+ MB with an AMD Phenom 9600 and 8GB DDR2 RAM.

Why don't you use the Resource Monitor (Task Manager/Performance/ click on
Resource Monitor button at the bottom) to see what processes are doing the
I/O to your disks. You can see the processes that are writing your I/O and
what files are being written. Personally I see no difference in I/O between
Vista64 and Windows 7 M3 which I am using virtually full time.

"Charlie Russel - MVP" <charlie[ at ]mvKILLALLSPAMMERSps.org> 12/13/2008 2:58:24 PM
I haven't found either to be a big problem. I no longer have any Vista boxes
except for remaining test boxes - everything else is moved to Win7. But the
behaviour has been the same - there's a lot of disk activity early, until
both indexing and defrag get caught up. But then things settle down and it's
not an issue.

Charlie,

I'm really disappointed with Microsoft.. We spend a fortune to
obtain Vista Ultimate 64x and haven't had it for just a couple
of months and you are already using the beta of Win7...

You'd think they'd update Vista to include improvements that
are needed for at least a little while.

I hate to use the word 'rip-off' but that is what comes to mind.

Just for information.. What does Win7 do that Vista doesn't?

Thanks for your reply..

Jack

If you Google for 'Windows 7' you can find lots of
information about it. PC Magazine & PC World have both had
reviews of it lately and I have seen other links to reviews
of the Beta.

There's a ton of data available and it would quite a bit to
post the information here.

I will always be using the next version of just about any OS you can think
of, except OS/X. It's my job, it's what I do. Windows 7 is not even in beta
yet - a preview was made available to developers at the PDC and some others.
It will be some time before Win7 is released. When it is, you'll have to
make your decision. I know what mine will be.

Vista has been out for quite a while. I'm sorry you waited so long to move
to it. MS has made it clear that they intend to make smaller releases going
forward, but more often. They don't want to have another release that is as
huge a change as Vista, nor as long coming.

Interestingly, I didn't move to full time use of Vista until RC1. In 64-bit,
it simply wasn't stable enough. But I've been "self-hosting" (running the
release full time as my main workstation) since the release of 6801. Been
pretty solid so far, and I like some things a lot.

You beat me. I didn't find Vista64 stable and friendly enough until about 6
months after RTM. I loved XP64 for its stability. Win 7-64 has been stable
and has had amazingly few problems for a pre-beta.
