Greetings,
You can manually uninstall Messenger by clicking Start, then Run (if not using Vista), inputing the following and hitting enter: msiexec /x {B1403D7D-C725-4858-AACC-7E5FA2D72859}
You can find the other IDs for the other parts of the latest beta applications here on my blog: http://messengergeek.spaces.live.com/blog/cns!E3785B1281BBDA1!868.entry

Hi,
See my post above. Then after that, you can install 8.5: http://messenger.jonathankay.com/redir/wlm85.asp
Please note that only previous beta versions were forced to update.

I've got this problem too, and it won't let me downgrade, and i've tried deleting the Messenger beta and then try coming back on the Windows Live, but it won't let me. Also I don't understand a word you're all saying. Please help in English D:

Right, you must be fed up of me now but i've figured it out for XP
- Control Panel - Add/Change Programs - Look for Windows Live Beta (Or something like that) - Click on change settings (the button) - Untick all the boxes in the pop up thing - continue - Wait for till it's completed - Go to the MSN live site to download :)
Sorry that the explanation isn't great, but it should help a bit :)

I found a solution to the Catastrophic Failure here:
http://www.groovypost.com/howto/geek-stuff/windows-live-installer-catastrophic-failure-fix/
Turns out to be a problem when you have a BETA version of Windows Live Suite installed and you try to install a copy of Non Beta Windows Live Suite. groovyPost.com fixed my issue.

[Quoted Text] Alas, not a solution for me. The install acted just like it did before - going all the way through then doing "rollback" on everything. Next?

1. Run the custom setup found at the ms url above; 2. Uninstall all Live apps in Add-Remove (not all will uninstall); 3. Remove all other Live apps with the Windows Install Cleanup program; 4. Run a check on your registry to remove the stuff left over, or run ZapMessenger; 5. Reboot; 6. Run the custom setup program as in step 1, full install successful.
Thanks all but what a pain! Is this newsgroup the official beta area?

I don't think it's specifically for the Beta version, but rather for all versions of Windows Live Mail.

What I meant was that it was a shame that there wasn't a link in the program itself where one could either report a bug/problem, or check to see if the problem being experienced had already been discovered (if not also the fix/workaround). It's one of those things that differentiate real Beta testing from 'free software'.

Hi Iguana. It's a simple fix. You probably have a BETA install of another Live product. I found an explanation here on the exact issue your having:
