About port forwarding and UPnP Zig <zig[ at ]invalid.invalid> 12/28/2008 2:15:03 AM Hi everybody, I'd like to know if it's necessary to enable UPnP on Windows' firewall when UPnP is already installed on Windows, and when the the feature is enabled on a P2P application (such as LimeWire, eMule or Shareaza) and on the router. You know, when you open the settings window of the firewall, within the Exceptions Tab, you have a check box for "UPnP framework": does it need to be enabled as well? What's the purpose of this firewall option? The question also concerns Vista but I suppose it's the same on both operating systems. Besides, as a side question: does the default install come with UPnP or is it necessary to install it from the CD? Thanks in advance. Of course it would be way easier for me to check it myself instead of bothering you with that, but it's just that currently I do not have access to a computer with Windows XP SP2. I also took a look at http://www.microsoft.com/whdc/device/media/upnp.mspx but it didn't really help. -- shareaza dot com was hijacked and now distributes an iMesh and BearShare clone called ShareazaV4 or V5 which have nothing to do with the real, open source Shareaza. I don't believe it should be necessary to enable UPnP in the Windows (sp2/sp3) firewall but you sometimes have to open UDP ports to enable peer-to-peer programs to work properly. The main thing is to enable port forwarding.
