Hi:
I have tried my best to find the reason that Windows Defrag will not run to completion almost all of the time. When it stops before completion and I view the report there is always indicate one file that it could not defrag.
I purchased Perfect Disk 2008 and can run it through to completion where it indicates there are no (zero) files that are fragmented. However, I can immediately go to Windows Defrag and run it and almost always it will stop and show one file that is fragmented.
On occasion after repeatedly running Perfect Disk 2008 I have gone to Windows Defrag and it will in fact rarely run through to completion. However, if I close the Defrag screen out and come back and run another Windows Defrag it will not run through again to completion.
I have searched and searched for a solution to this problem and if there is anyone out there in "Cyberspace" that has a resolution to this problem I would very much appreciate you letting me know. It appears no one knows an answer to this question....
Thanks,
ColTom2

Let me get this straight... you PAID for Perfect Disk, and you like how it runs, yet you are STILL obsessed with Windows native defragger?
Don't you think maybe it's time to move on?

What do you mean by won't run to completion? What happens? OS version? Error message? Free space? Etc.

Use Perfect Disk and don't look back at Windows defrag.

Hi Rob:
I am going to do as you describe and I knew that I would get a bunch of "hyped" answers as above. It's really no big deal other than I would like to know if anyone has a fix to this problem.
I have had this problem previously, as apparently lots of others, and somehow one way of the other resolved it. It's just that it seems, as I stated, no one has a real solution for this issue.
Thanks for your sensible reply....

Hi ColTom2,
As said by the rest, its time to move on. I suggest you to use Smart Defrag from IOBit. its FREE. and its as good as Diskeeper. One not on your problem though its that Windows Defragmenter fragmentation analyzer is rather "not so smart". You can have a very empty and defragmented hard disk recognized as fragmented by it due to its backwardness.

I took a look at Smart Defrag. Is there a way to turn it off so it doesn't run in the background? I'm not sure I need constant defragging. ;-)

I'm sure there is, and you can answer that for yourself by taking a little time to work through all the settings.
It has zero-impact on your system. You won't even know it's running.

Hi JD,
You could do so by disabling the Auto Defragment. I actually used not to like programs running on the background. I actually still do. But the nifty thing about this Smart Defrag is that you can set the program to run in the background after only certain idle time.

You have several answers that promote a work around not a fix. The first thing that I would do is clean up your system by using, Control Panel > internet options > delete all; Empty all your temp folder; run disk cleanup: Command Prompt > chkdsk /f > reboot. Command Prompt > sfc/scannow, (have your xp install disk inserted,or point to the i386 folder); command prompt > sfc /purgecache; Reboot; Now try to disk defragmenter.
I don't believe in spending money on software that is already integrated into the OS.

Once installed, does the program appear in Add/Remove Programs? Just in case I don't like it?

Hi:
I knew that I had this problem once before, but could not recall how I fixed this problem. All the credit goes to "Andrew E." who back last July provided the answer below: From cmd run: CLEANMGR Then: Defrag C: Once thru, exit Cmd, open System Properties,Advanced, Performance, Advanced, Virtual Memory, change, set C: to "no page file" click set and OK 2X,close out and Restart computer.
Back in XP,open Cmd, type :Defrag C: Close when thru, reopen System Properties, Advanced, Performance, Advanced, Virtual Memory, set "System Manage File", click Set and OK 2X, close out and Restart computer.
It might take a time or two,but the fragmented files will end ~ This is indeed the fix to this problem!

You need to post this problem on "microsoft.public.internetexplorer.general". If you are not already a subscriber to this Newsgroup then you will need to subscribe and then make your posting. I am sure someone can help you, as it sounds Internet Explorer related.

What is the CPU and how much RAM does your computer have? Right click on the My Computer icon on your Desktop and select Properties to get this information.
Try Ctrl+Alt+Delete to select Task Manager and click the Performance Tab. Under Commit Charge what is the Total, the Limit and the Peak?
How large is your hard disk? How much free space on the disk?
Select Start, All Programs, Accessories, System Tools, Disk CleanUp to Empty your Recycle Bin and Remove Temporary Internet Files. Also select Start, All Programs, accessories, System Tools, Disk CleanUp, More Options, System Restore and remove all but the latest System Restore point.

Hi Shelly:
It is hard to tell with the small amount of info that you have provided. Are you able to access the internet with Internet Explorer? When you normally get a white page it means you are not connecting to the internet.
Also you could have a spyware/malware problem. Open IE and go to Tools>Internet Options> and the first Tab (General) and look at Homepage and see if it is the Homepage that you normally use. If not, then your Homepage has been hijacked. To reset your Homepage open IE and type in your correct Homepage address and then Open IE with it. Now go back to Tools>Internet Options and under Home Page click on "Use Current">Apply>OK. You now need to update all your AV and spyware/malware programs and run complete scans. Download and install Ad-Aware 2008 Free and Malwarebytes 'Anti MAlware if you do not have them. Google them to find download sites.
As to you not being able to Defrag try reinstalling it by running a Search for Dfrg.inf file. It should find it under C:\Windows\Inf. Once you have found this file right click on it and scroll to Install and left click on it and it will reinstall Defrag.

You are right. How stupid. I did the same, downloaded Perfectdisk and it ran smoothly. I'll go ahead and make the purchase. My next computer will be a MAC >
