how to configure an alfa wireless-g ethernet router/bridge?
J David Ellis <nospam[ at ]home.org> 12/29/2008 4:48:47 AM
i'm preparing to connect a two-computer home network to a
wireless isp that is not yet on the air. both computers are
xp sp2. they are currently connected to an ethernet router
that is fed by a microwave internet service that will soon
disappear. i want to connect to a wireless isp and have the
box that does that connect to the two computers via
ethernet. there is currently a wireless access point
connected to the router. either computer will utilize this
for internet access if reconfigured to do so. i'm using this
netgear access point to test the alfa router.

the alfa aip-w610h router connects to the above wireless
access point; it's "status" page shows the connection. an xp
sp2 computer, ethernet connected to the alfa router's lan
port, can ping the router. but a browser on the computer
cannot display a web address; there is a timeout message.

if the computer's built in wireless adapter is connected to
the access point, no problem with internet access.

i need help figuring out where the data-transfer breakdown
occurs. an ip address wrong somewhere? any help you can
offer this network neophyte will be appreciated.

Hi
The Access Point is connected to the Wireless Router WAN port, Regular Port?
It core IP is the same as a the Router, or it is another subnet?
I.e. you have to give a technical description with network related info in
order to understand what connects to what?
If the Access Point is connected to the WAN port it might need a crossover
cable.

thanks for helping out, jack --

learning how to ask the question is the trick. :=)

the computer is cat5 wired to a lan port on the alfa
wireless router. the alfa wireless router is connected, over
the air, to a netgear wap (wireless access point). the
netgear wap is wired to a zyxel router that is wired to a
microwave radio. radio and zyxel router are provided by the isp.

the alfa router status display (in a browser running on the
computer) shows the alfa router is "connected" to the
netgear wap. the status screen displays the netgear wap's ssid.

everything appears correct but the browser on the computer
cannot resolve a url; it cannot "see" a dns. there is always
a timout. if the computer's built-in wireless adapter
connects to the netgear wap, no internet access problem.

i'm guessing there is some setting in the alfa aip-w610h
router that is being overlooked. any suggestions as to what
it might be? the trick is to find which dozen settings are
important, given 1000 possibilities. :=)

fixed ip addresses are used throughout the network for this
testing. security is disabled. anti-virus and firewall are
disabled.

should i post the alfa router's status screen?
