I posted this earlier, and there was a reply to it and when I went to see it, it was there, then disappeared (really!!) and now it is no longer there, so here goes again.
I have tried several times to load SP3 both from cd and download from the internet and it always fails. I receive messages that "an error occurred while copying file beethov9.wma" and also "cannot copy file to destination directory".
How do I solve this?

You are attempting to utilize the horrid web front-end to the newsgroups, I assume? If so - that is your issue for the most part.
First - your message found using "Google Groups"... http://groups.google.com/group/microsoft.public.windowsxp.configuration_manage/browse_frm/thread/ade44b6b0db90a65/6d18c278afaef3ea#6d18c278afaef3ea
Then - how to connect to these newsgroups with a newsreader...
Outlook Express (XP):
How to Configure Outlook Express for Internet News http://support.microsoft.com/kb/171164
How to Subscribe to Newsgroups in Outlook Express http://support.microsoft.com/kb/171190
A little more detail... http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/outlookexpressnewreader.htm
Windows Mail (Vista): http://www.web-articles.info/e/a/title/Windows-Vista:-How-to-Read-News-with-Windows-Mail/
Setting Up Windows Mail to Read Newsgroups
When you set up Windows Mail for e-mail, it automatically sets itself up with a news account for the Microsoft Communities newsgroups. This account gives you access to a wide range of Microsoft related newsgroups. For wider reading, you'll probably want to set Windows Mail up to read newsgroups provided by your ISP or another online service provider. To set up Windows Mail to read newsgroups, take the following steps:
1. Open Windows Mail as usual for example, choose Start E-mail. 2. Choose Tools Accounts. Windows Mail displays the Internet Accounts dialog box. 3.Click the Add button. Windows Mail displays the Select Account Type screen .. 4. Select the Newsgroup Account item, and then click the Next button. Windows Mail displays the Your Name screen. 5. In the Display Name text box, type the name you want to use for your posts. Depending on whether you'll be posting personally or professionally, you may want to use a pseudonym or a variation of your name. 6. Click the Next button. Windows Mail displays the Internet News E-mail Address screen. 7. In the E-mail Address text box, type the e-mail address that you want to use for your posts. You may want to use a variation of your real e-mail address to throw off spammers. 8. Click the Next button. The wizard displays the Internet News Server Name screen. 9. Type the name of your news server in the News NNTP Server text box. If you don't know the name, consult your ISP. 10. If you need to log on to the news server, select the My News Server Requires Me to Log On check box. Many news servers don't require you to log on. 11. Click the Next button. If you didn't select the check box in the previous step, the wizard displays its Congratulations page. Go to step 13. 12. If you did select the My News Server Requires Me to Log On check box, the wizard displays the Internet News Server Logon screen. Enter your account name and password. Select the Remember Password check box if you think the convenience of not having to enter the password outweighs the marginal risk of storing it. Then click the Next button. The wizard displays the Congratulations page. 13.Click the Finish button. The wizard closes, returning you to the Internet Accounts dialog box. 14. Click the Close button. Windows Mail displays the Subscribe to Newsgroups dialog box. 15. Click the appropriate button:
.. If you want to use Windows Mail's Communities features which include the ability to see message ratings and rankings and download a list of newsgroups, click the Show Available Newsgroups and Turn on Communities button. At this writing, many newsgroups do not support Communities, and in others, the Communities features appear not to be fully implemented - but matters may have improved by the time you read this.
.. If you just want to download a list of newsgroups, click the Show Available Newsgroups, but Don't Turn on Communities button.
.. If you don't want to download the list of newsgroups now, click the Don't Download Newsgroups Now button. You'll need to download the list of newsgroups at some point, but if you're currently using a dial-up connection, you might prefer to leave the download until later.
16.If you chose to download the newsgroups, Windows Mail displays the Downloading Newsgroups dialog box while it downloads them.

This isn't a forum; it's a newsgroup. The reason you're having such problems is that you are using the awful web interface to read this newsgroup--it's the slowest, clunkiest, most error-prone method there is. Do yourself a favor and switch to a newsreader, such as Outlook Express, which comes with Windows XP, or Windows Mail, which comes with Vista. See http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/outlookexpressnewreader.htm

You're welcome. Glad to help. And of course, whatever newsreader you prefer is fine; it certainly doesn't have to be Outlook Express. Personally I use Agent.

Now that I have myself setup on the newsreader, lets go back to my problem loading SP3 as regards the beethov9.wma file that others have had issues with also.
My computer is an IBM T41 with XP PRO.
I have read the solutions offered in http://forums.techarena.in/windows-update/964895.htm but these will not work for what appears to be the following problems. (Basically they seem to want to provide access to the Documents folder under All Users. Mine, as the others have reported, is access denied.
1) I believe I am logged on as Administrator as I have the only account
However, it will not accept being set for sharing.
2) There is no Security Tab under properties for the folder in question.
3) It cannot be moved as it is a system folder.
4) It will not accept unchecking Read-only.
5) I cannot clear the Use simple file sharing (Recommended) check box in Folder Options because there is none.
6) I also tried the RUN command %windir%\svcpack.log, but the file beethov9.wma could not be found.
It seems that my OS is not showing the same options as the ones described in that document I referenced. Could it be that the IBM load has some additional security that prevents this from working, or even my Zone Alarm Suite is a problem?

Please accept this correction to my post of a few minutes ago. I can clear the Use simple file sharing (Recommended) check box in Folder Options. It does not help.
Sorry if I caused any confusion.

No, just unchecking the simple file sharing tab won't solve permissions problems. Doing this does make the security tab for the files and folders visible. What you must do is go back to the folder and select the security tab. Then, check and fix the permissions to allow members of the administrators group full control. Jim

Jim and all.
Thanks for all the suggestions. In the meantime, even though I was not able to obtain access to the folder, I tried again to load SP3 and followed the suggestion that said,
"When the "beethov9.wma error" comes up (about 1 1/4 hrs. into the update), open Windows Explorer and go to C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Documents, then right-click on Documents and bring up Properties, then the Sharing tab. Check the box "Allow Network Users to Change My Files". You don't have to be logged in as admin. Retry the copy. That's it - I don't know why one of you techie experts couldn't have said it so simply."
My window did not offer exactly what is quoted above, but using some logic I did get access and the program then continued to load and complete the install.
Again thanks to all.
