Upgrading Windows XP Home to Pro
B Farkas 10/28/2008 4:59:17 PM
I currently have a laptop with Windows XP Home SP3 installed. I need to
install a software package that does not support Windows XP Home or Vista. I
need to upgrade to Windows XP Pro but not sure what to buy. I tried a copy of
XP Pro version 2002 but got an error message that stated the version on the
computer was newer than on the CD and that I should restart the computer and
install as a new installation. I would prefer not to format the hard drive as
I have a large number of software packages (programming type & AutoCad) and
files on the system that I cannot afford to lose.
In my computer under the Help Tab/About Windows, I have version 5.1 (Build
2600.xpsp_sp3_gdr.080814-1236 : Service Pack 3)

You need to buy a copy of XP Pro. If you can get one with Service Pack 3
included, this is the best choice. If not, you'll get one with Service Pack
2 and slipstream SP3 into it. You need to do your upgrade with a version of
XP that is at the same service pack level as your current install. It is
easy to slipstream. Don't forget to back up your data before doing the
upgrade, because Stuff Happens.

Out of shear curiosity, do you mind letting us (me) know what software
will not install on anything but XP Pro?

Please don't multi-post - this is also answered in some of the other groups

You can slipstream your version of XP Pro to SP2 and then to SP3 following
which the upgrade should work fine.
See instructions here http://www.webtree.ca/windowsxp/slipstream.htm

You must make certain you backup your important data now before you try the
upgrade.

Why does the OP need to purchase another copy of XP Pro? The OP can simply
slipstream what they already purchased.

Which software pacakage do you need to install? XP Home is *very*
similar to XP Pro.

Did you fail to read the OP?
"I tried a copy of XP Pro version 2002 but got an error message"
That seems to tell me he has a copy of XP Pro.

Apparently, I didn't read it carefully enough. :-)
