Deleting files from within a shadow copy
Mark Gould 12/12/2008 3:41:02 PM
We are running Windows Server 2003 Standard

Have shadow copies enabled

The issue is say a user deletes or moves some files from a folder, it is
possible to then bring up the previous version of the folder and retrieve the
files. This is obviously the correct behaviour but is there anyway that I can
manually remove the copies of the applicable files from the previous version
option.

With thanks

You would have to restore the files/folders to a different folder, delete
the unwanted files, then create a new backup.

I think we may be talking at slight corss purposes with thanks as I would
like to make it for some files that once they are deleted or moved from a
folder they can nnot be undeleted uusing Previous Versions

Sorry, I do not understand what you're trying to say. Can you rephrase this?

Re: Deleting files from within a shadow copy

Of course

If File B is in Folder a and then file B is deleted from folder A or moved
from Folder A, it is still possible to recover file B usind the previous
version function on Folder A.

This is great and is the purpose of Previous Versions.

However I would like to manually be able to delete some files from the
Previous Version "folder" so once File B is deleted from folder A, I can
ensure that file B can NOT be receovered via the previous versions function
on Folder A,

ie I would like to manually disable the previous version functionality for
some files that have been deleted.

How can I do this?

With thanks

Mark

I don't think you can - it seems to run contrary to the basic backup
strategy implemented in ntbackup.exe.

Previous versions of what?

Hello Mark,

Thanks for posting here.

According to you description, my understanding is that:

You would like to manually delete some files from the Previous Version
"folder" so once File B is deleted from folder A, you want to ensure that
file B can NOT be recovered via the previous versions function on Folder A.
Also you would like to manually disable the previous version functionality
for some files that have been deleted.

Based on the research, since the previous version functionality is based on
the Volume Shadow copy services, the individual files cannot be removed
from a Shadow copy because of the reason that the Shadow Copies are
read-only. If you want to manually delete some files from the previous
version of "Folder" in a given shadow copy, the only way delete the entire
shadow copy.

For more information about VSS, you may refer to:

Hope it helps.

The Windows 2003 Shaddow copy facility that enables the use of "previous
versions" of files

Best regards

Mark
