Unable to install printer
"Nick" <NoOne[ at ]NotHere.com> 12/30/2008 3:27:30 PM
We have a few XP machines on which I am no-longer able to install new
printers, error:
'A policy is in effect on your computer which prevents you from connecting
to this print queue'

All other machines are fine just a few which have this problem. All are now
XP SP3.

Anyone got any ideas?

Nick

Hi Nick:

Printer can't be installed on XP SP3 workstation, but where is the printer
located?

Local? If not Local, what type of printer connection? Is it shared from
another workstation, installed and shared on SBS? or IP printer on your
LAN?

Besides the message, any errors in your event logs?

Hi Larry,

It is an IP printer with a DNS entry to resolve it's Name to the fixed IP
address. Installed but not shared as such on the Server.

Clients are connected by:
Add Network Printer - Connect to this printer - \\Servername\ - select
appropriate printer from list.

This has worked fine for all other printers and all other workstations but
not on these few.

This is caused because the "Point and print" driver is changing a protected
file. You can control this with the group policy:
admin template->control panel->printers

In there are a series of policies that allow you to lock down (or allow)
certain servers to push out new drivers to clients. You can loosen security
for the machine hosting the printer's driver and you'll be good to go.

Cliff,

I am confussed, which oarticular GPO are you refering to, I cannot find any
Point and Print settings configured in any GPOs?

Surely all machines would be getting the same GPOs, in which case why are
some machines different to the others.

Well, XP has a more loose interpretation of Point and Print security than
Vista does. Actually XP at different service packs does as well.

Also, depending on your OU structure, not all machines may be receiving the
same group policies.

As far as location, if you went to where I indicated, (user policies->admin
templates->control panel->printer) you'll see on the right several
individual policy objects. As I recall (going off memory right now because
I'm not at a machine with RSAT) it is about five or six down on the list.
It is names Point and Print Restrictions. You can control what servers are
allowed to serve up drivers, how the OS responds, and other such settings.
If a machine has decided a driver is not allowed, for whatever reason, you
will receive the message you posted.

You can also use RSoP to help find out which policy is causing you
headaches, if indeed someone locked point and print down too far...

And to reply to myself, I should also mention that I've seen some
manufacturers set up the 'local group policy' differently from image to
image, so that could also explain why you are seeing different behaviors
even if all of your machines are at XP SP3 as you indicated. If the GPO is
'not configured' then the local policy will take effect and cause
unpredictable behavior. Personally I recommend enabling the policy and
adding your print servers to the list of servers. That way you have a
consistent policy in place, regardless of what a manufacturer did to their
image.
