Hello,
I have been having lots of problems with the OEM Vista Home Premium due
to possible infections or ?, and I have decided to upgrade to Vista
Ultimate. I have the upgrade version ready to install and I have a few
questions about it. First, I am wondering about the possiblility of
future installations if I destroy the OEM installation by using the
upgrade. I understand that the upgrade requires that there be an
operating OS to work. If I install the upgrade over the existing OEM
and then have some problem down the road where I need to write 0's to
the HD and reinstall the Ultimate OS, how will I do that without the OEM
present? I can see that, if I copy just the Windows folder from C:\ it
will take about 15 gigs. If I save that on a USB backup HD, will I be
able to install it as a platform later or do I need to save a copy of
the entire contents including applications? Presently, I only have
about 18 gigs of space left on my USB external backup drive. I do not
have the option of using the hidden OS on my OEM because it has been
destroyed by a change in file systems. Second, is there a sticky post
or any recommendation for changing the default settings on a fresh
install of Vista Ultimate that would help with security. For instance,
I am thinking I want to disable file sharing -- stuff like that.
Thanks

By doing a clean install with your upgrade version:

If you have an "infection" problem your Anti Virus/malware/adware is NOT doing its job.. or your surfing habits are sloppy . Either way these would need to fixed first.... or the problem will just manifest itself in your new installation and your back to square one..a reinstallation and wasted time.

Thanks for the responses. I am using Spyware Doctor 6 with antivirus +
Threatfire. If there is an infection, it could have come from a program
I downloaded. I have run several online scanners and they say that it
is clean. Still, I know that does not guarantee a clean bill of health.
I was under the impression that installing Ultimate would make it
clean. Am I wrong? Can it leave infections from the old OS? Does it
not install all new files?
My main question is this: How do I keep my old OS for future
installations? Won't I need it if I clean the drive and start over?
Can I just install the contents of C:\Windows without all the other
stuff and have enough of a platform to install the Vista Ultimate
Upgrade?

Upgrading to Ultimate will not give you a "clean" machine. The infections are not necessarily in the Vista directory....it could be anywhere on the HD. What makes you think you do have an infection??? I have had Vista for about 11/2 years and have never reinstalled. Step one is to make sure your present installation is clean..run a few more scans from different online antivirus scanners. I would "clone"or create an image of the present HD with a program like Acronis True Image onto a 2nd external hard drive. This would preserve your present OS....hopefully clean. Then from within the present OS start the Ultimate upgrade...and follow the instructions. If in the future for some reason you need to revert back Acronis will be able to reimage the old OS back to the internal HD. good luck. peter

Forgot a few things A clean install is possible with an upgrade CD. See this site http://www.winsupersite.com/showcase/winvista_upgrade_clean.asp During that process you can format your HD which would wipe your HD clean. No programs...no saved work...no infections. You would lose all programs that came preinstalled on your system. Any purchased program would need to be reinstalled from the original CD.

Hello,
The reason I think I might still have an infection is because I still
cannot get my windows update to work, the Problem Reports do not
download solutions and whenever I try to access 'already found'
solutions, it cannot connect. I have run HijackThis, RootkitRevealer,
and other programs to find out if there might be an 'underlying'
persistent problem, but I really don't know enough to understand what
they are telling me. These are a few persistent problems that I have
been trying to fix for months. My other posts show that I have followed
all of the instructions to fix the problems - short of reinstalling all
of my drivers. I decided to just go ahead and buy the new OS. I know
that the OEM VistaHomePremium license lives and dies with the ACER
computer it came on. That is why I would like to preserve it. If I
want to get another computer in a year or so, I could put the OS back on
it and use the VistaUltimate upgrade on the new computer. My old XP Pro
(without any service packs) has been through several recycles like that
and is still working on my backup computer. The Ultimate is manily for
MultiMedia. I got it from a DealTree ebay auction and I cannot be
confident about where it was before.

When I had Vista update problems I found it to be my ZoneAlarm Firewall...I am not familiar with your antivirus..does it include a firewall?? if it does have you tried turning it off and try the update??
My Vista installation is on an Acer Laptop...and I Imaged the drive using Acronis True Image onto a external HD connected via USB...every couple of weeks I reimage to keep it up to date.Especially now that it has SP1 into it and the recovery partition only has the original. Creating a Bootable Emergency disk with Acronis lets you start the system with the disk and run from the disk in order to reapply the image back to the internal HD..no OS required. peter

Thanks for the comments. My firewall is Windows so that should not
have been a problem. I too have an external HD for backup but I use old
drives from earlier installations. I have a '30gig' drive that I have
made ready for Vista. I have spent a lot of time today trying to delete
all of the extra applications that came with the ACER OEM system and I
still am at 29+ gigs. I have to get to around 27. I find that there
are some 3d party applications that will not respond to unstallation. I
also have a copy of AcronisDiskDirector10.
NEW QUESTION: It just occurred to me that, since all of the various
Vista installations are on the Ultimate upgrade disk, is is possible to
use that disk with Windows PE and repair Vista Home Premium? I had
thought of repairing it before but I couldn't because I didn't have an
installation DVD. I know that this won't fix a malware problem (if
there is one) but it would leave the cloned VistaHomePremium image
repaired for storage. Right???

this from the MS website Installing Windows Vista. Windows PE runs every time you install Windows Vista. The graphical tools that collect configuration information during the setup phase are running within Windows PE. In addition, information technology (IT) departments can customize and extend Windows PE to meet their unique deployment needs. Windows PE also provides support for servicing Windows images. Important Windows PE supports the deployment of previous versions of Windows. Refer to your licensing agreement for restrictions or contact your Microsoft representative.
Troubleshooting. Windows PE is useful for both automatic and manual troubleshooting. For example, if Windows Vista fails to start because of a corrupted system file, Windows PE can automatically start and launch the Windows Recovery Environment (Windows RE). You can also manually start Windows PE to use built-in or customized troubleshooting and diagnostic tools.
Recovery. OEMs and independent software vendors (ISVs) can use Windows PE to build customized, automated solutions for recovering and rebuilding computers running Windows Vista. For example, users can start their computers from Windows PE recovery CDs or recovery partitions to automatically reformat their hard disks and to reinstall Windows Vista with the original drivers, settings, and applications.
