Normally you'd want to reinstall the driver software for your sound card.
That could be present on an install CD (i.e. a separate disk from the XP disk). Or, visit the website of the sound card manfacturer - for example Creative or Realtek, and download + install the appropriate driver software.
When windows starts up, you'd normally see a message about "Found new hardware", and in many cases the driver software would be available through windows update download service.
