Unable to sign in to Windows Live Messenger on Windows Mobile
"Sebastian V." <nospam[ at ]devnull.org> 12/17/2008 4:32:26 PM
It seems that lots of people are having trouble to sign in to Messenger from
a Windows Mobile device.
Is there any solution to these problems?
I have WinMobile 6.1 standard and when I try to sign in, it tells me "there
is a problem with the server".
If i sign in with my secondary account, which has no contacts at all, it
works...

Greetings,

I won't lie to you, I haven't used Windows Mobile for maybe 4 years. However, I'm wondering
if you've had the opportunity to try from another phone or even have done a hard reset just
to see if that changes anything. Just a thought as that would eliminate it as being a
problem on the phone to a problem in the software/server.

Hi,

Yeah -- I'm thinking more that there's some configuration file made per account and it's
either broken or they changed something which prevents it from working properly. This has
been known to happen on the Windows client in several cases throughout it's history.

I can't really be more specific or even know if I'm journeying down he wrong path as I don't
have access to any devices with the client. So I could be completely wrong.

I am having the same problem with my Windows Live Messenger on my Windows Live device. I have had a long and frustrating email discussion with Microsoft's customer services, who advised me to "update" to the publicly available Windows Live for Windows Mobile which does not have messenger (ridiculous suggestion), and then eventually they just told me to contact o2, my mobile provider. O2 customer services referred me to Microsoft customer services. An endless loop of uselessness. I am glad I am not the only one having this problem. I have created threads on other forums (Microsoft and XDA-Developers) and have found others who are experiencing an identical issue. I believe the issue arose from using the new Messenger Sign In At Multiple Places feature (previously in beta), partly because when I attempt to sign in on my mobile, I am signed out from the desktop client with the message "you are signed in at too many places". Ultimately I think this is probably a server-side bug which the Windows Live developers have not found or do not consider to be important due to how neglected Windows Mobile seems to be these days. -- mdsharpe

Hi,

I've heard this story several times over the past few weeks (beyond what's written here) from
various people across the globe. I don't personally own one of these devices so I can't give
my personal experience however.

I don't believe it has anything to do with the MPOP feature however. What you're seeing
where it signs you out is normal for "legacy" clients - you can only log in from multiple
locations using the desktop Live Messenger 2009 client, all others will sign you out.

Thanks for the reply mate. It's reassuring to hear that the problem is relatively widespread - more hope for a fix one day. However, I am not sure I agree with the "signed in at too many places" message being the standard legacy message, which is in my experience more to do with "you have signed in on a client that doesn't support mpop"? When I created a new account it worked for a few days, during which time I was signing into Messenger beta with it, before it too started getting the error. I am still attempting to get some support from Microsoft. The latest suggestion from them is that I try and fix my SOCKS proxy settings?? -- mdsharpe
