I have a Dell Inspiron 1501 laptop with Vista Premium installed and 2 GB of memory.
Playing a song stored in my music folder (in any format: MP3, WMA, etc.) from within the player takes over 30 seconds to start playing after pressing the "Play" button. The same thing happens when switching to the next or previous song.
This is incredibly bothersome and ridiculous, specially because it is part of Windows Vista, while with iTunes and other players the songs play immediately; no waiting of any kind.
The thing that really bothers me is that in Vista I cannot fix the problem by re-installing WMP the same way I could re-install it in Win XP. Microsoft does not post individual components of Vista (IE, WMP, etc.) as it is done for Win XP. Therefore, if one component gets messed up, you are doomed to re-install the whole operating system to get it fixed.
Does anyone know how to fix this problem, or at least re-install WMP?
I'm really considering switching to Apple.

What sound card do you have? If you update the sound card driver to the latest version from the vendor, does that help?
I would seriously doubt that this is a player issue. As such reinstalling would do nothing. If you absolutely feel you're right, bug me on that front and I'll dig up a diagnostic tool I have in the works. Given all the data so far from that tool, the "player needing a reinstall" is almost never the source of actual failure. WMP just gets affected by the other things in the system - such as random audio card drivers. =\
Anyways, http://zachd.com/pss/pss.html#reinstallvista covers most of the reinstall information already, minus the diagnostic check.

I have exactly the same problem. Before, I had an Dell XPS with Windows XP, bought it about 3 years ago and all was perfect. Then, a couple of months ago, I got an XPS again, with bigger memory and Vista. Now Media Player takes a good 30 seconds to start a song and also skips a lot. I just don't understand and it's so annoying. ALL my music is stored there and I'm having to transfer songs I want to play to itunes which is a pain and not as well organised. I want my old Media Player back! Please help!

I believe a number of Dells shipped with a particularly bad sound card driver that you would really want to update.

I had exactly the same problem and this person told me to go to this link and follow the instructions and now it's perfect. Songs start straight away! Good luck!
"Skipping of tracks on Dell machines is common if they have the Sigmatel audio chipset (sound card) installed, because Dell ship them with defective audio driver software.
Generally, you'd need to go to the Speaker configuration in windows as per Zachd's answer in this discussion, to disable audio enhancements :
