PROBLEM PLEASE HELP-=== loosing com3 port on start up - 1 com3 port how come it is not listed as com3 when ports are scanned? 2 have tried changing port number but msg is given they are in use! 3 how to reserve com3 for dialup internet? or block com3 from any other program taking it? HAVE HP PAVILLION WITH WIN XP HOM EDITION 2 YEARS OLD USE DIAL UP MODEM ATTACHED TO COM 3. FAX, PRINTER NOT CONNECTED original modem- datafax soft modem with smart cp attached to com3 port- that came installed was replaced due to this problem with a new modem--PCI softv92 modem attached to com3 port. on start up in the morning loose com3 port to some other program. device manager shows no problem. modem cannot be queried because port is used by some other program!! task manager do not show any 2 programs are accessing com3 at once. so far only solution is to do a recovery and when modem is installed modem gets com3 port!!!!!

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ now for some reason if dial up gets disconnected and when tried to reconnect it mayor may not connect due to com3 problem. task manager do not show 2 programs are accessing com3 at once. Note that most PCs are only delivered with two standard serial ports, usually set up as COM 1 and COM 2. These usually have been set up as AUTO in the BIOS. You may want to set the two standard serila ports to a COM setting instead of AUTO.
COM 1 uses IRQ 4 at hex 3F8 (??) COM 2 uses IRQ 3 at hex 2F8 (??)
Then, your COM 3 may detect correctly.
