Where is 'folder options'?
gecko <alpha[ at ]olympus.net> 12/14/2008 1:58:24 PM
This seems weird. I want to change some folder options, but I can't
find any tab or icon that will allow me to. I want to allow viewing
of so-called hidden files. I know where the check box used to be, but
I can't find how to get there now.

Help please?

Thanks

Hi gecko,

you can find it by opening any folder directory, and click on Tools tab.

Not so.

I remember that was the way it used to work. Now all I see is:

MAP NETWORK DRIVE...
DISCONNECT NETWORK DRIVE...
SYNCHRONIZE...

I don't see FOLDER OPTIONS

So something has sure changed.

.... on your computer.

Anyway.

Control Panel --> Folder Options.
Is that method of getting to the same still there?

Fix your problem:
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/regs_edits/folderoptions.reg
( That's line 129 of Kelly's fixes:
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm )

Specifically, it is adding/more likely changing two registry entries for
you:

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer]
"NoFolderOptions"=dword:0000000

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet
Explorer\Restrictions]
"NoBrowserOptions"=dword:00000000

The first is likely the culprit - but changing both may be necesssary.

In the future - you may be able to (more quickly than posting/waiting) find
the answer on your own using an Internet search engine.

Search using Google!
http://www.google.com/
(How-to: http://www.google.com/intl/en/help/basics.html )

For example - a search for:
"Folder Options" missing in Windows XP
Results in many hits:
http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=%22Folder+Options%22+missing+in+Windows+XP

As of now...
The first and second 'hits' have the same answer I have given - although it
is pretty embedded in there. The third and fourth actually have the link to
Kelly's site and the fifth is the link to Kelly's site. Of course - the
search result order will change.

Anyway - hopefully that fixes you issue! Come back -let everyone know -
since this is archived indefinitely - perhaps someday a google search for
the same issue by someone else will lead to your question/answer and having
you respond back with 'that worked' or 'no good - still need help' would
assist those people in narrowing their search.

I have no path HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Policies. At least I don't
see it.

I have tried to customize Windows 95 98 XP 2000 and ME . My changes
sometimes work for a short time , mostly they are ignored .
I have tried using the Registry . Sometimes i get lucky and my
changes
work , but naturally the Microsoft advertizing , is impossible to
stop .

The correct method to tame W98SE , WXP is the Registry .

Even in Registry some changes will revert back automatically for
"safety" reasons !!
W98SE was a pain , for the 4 copies of R' , i had to go DOS7.1 to
RESTORE
RB0001.CAB .. WXP has made that easier ..

Bill Gates wanted you to have faith in his methods , use Control
Panel et al .

It will eventually fail . Only Registry will tame WXP ..

I have struggled with WV ( bought 2 Tosh 205D's ) .. Cant figure
anything ,

worse than earlier O.S.'s .

WV has a new Registry that will not allow 3rd party S/W to install
correctly .

W98SE lacked full USB firmware . WXP is OK . We have had many years

to test WXP , it works a bit better than all other M$ software .

One can botch the Registry and simply import back the piece that
you changed .

all you need do is dbl clik your saved fragment of Registry .

[ xxxx.reg ] , no matter where you find it , and

it will restore that part of R'.

Microsoft wants to run apps on your PC , when you

www.microsoft.com ...

Its easy to stop that , in the Registry .

File Mangler is in R' as [Explorer..] you need to know hoow to
type

in the correct verbage , and Explo' will do excatly what you want ,
without

ever having to tell it again . Just save that R' fragment and tell
us here in

this Forum . And we'll exchange our R' secrets with you ...

PC Mag used to do that ...

I created one 3 new [KEY]s in Left pane and one in Right pane .

But command for Right Pane is the menu button between the

left ALT and CTL keys by your left hand , next to cursor keys ..

Hit this button on your keybaord then clik the pop up box :

[DWORD32 bit ] , then after it displays your work in left pane ,

clik it and it will display a box , but in left pane , but box
refers to Right

pane ( it doesnt want to cover up the newly created line in Right
pane )

Now type in 00000000 and hit [enter ] .

OOOPs i typed a value into the [Default REG_SZ ...]

no problem , ill simply delete [Default REG_SZ ...]

cause its illegal , i wont delete it , it will merely clear the OOOPs
i entered .

The Registry is the most secure way to tame WXP .

Thanks to the above poster who offered the HKCU

How about using Registry to uninstall programs ?

I have had serious problems un-installing app's !

I trust Registry ... Can you help us uninstall stuff , using
REGISTRY ?

I have assigned xxxx.ext to my Editors and others , but i guess
deleteing

the first sign of Adobe , in REGISTRY may only delete parts and
pieces

of the ADODE [install] ....

O.T. BTW , another subject ... xxx.pdf will stall and do lots of
extra "work"
and block you temp , if you disable VCACHE in WXP !
I was able to disable in W98SE , but WXP will cause slow downs ...

Back to REGISTRY ....

Its the safest way to customize your WXP . I believe in it .

(snip long ridiculous rant)

Based on the posts you've made in this newsgroup recently, the reason you
are having such difficulties is that you think you know what you are doing
and you don't.

You really should refrain from giving other people any advice and spend some
time learning about the operating systems you use.

I see, this is the thread where you're giving registry advice. You really
don't know what you're talking about and should stop trying to help other
people break their systems.

Hi gecko,

Sorry for the late reply. In any case, you can't do that if you are at "My
Computer" tab. try going a little deeper

To view hidden files in Windows Explorer

1. Open the folder
2. Go to Tools, Folder Options
3. Click on the "View" tab
4. Under the folder "Hidden files and folders" click the circle by "Show
hidden files and folders" and click ok

If you are looking for some mysterious C: files, do steps 1-3 and scroll
down and uncheck "Hide protected operating system files"

Hope this helps
