Automatic Updates can't be turned on
"Oppie" <oppie[ at ]nospam.com> 12/19/2008 3:54:19 PM
I just installed the trial version of Onecare on an XP machine.
The onecare panel comes up and show Urgent- Turn on automatic Updates. I
clicked on the button to turn it on and got an error that Automatic Updates
can not be turned on a this time.

I previously had automatic updated set to download automatically but to let
me choose when to install. I notice that the automatic updates panel (from
Windows Control panel) is all grayed out (as is the windows firewall) Is
this normal?

I had run the free online safety scanner which identified a Trojan:
win32/startpage.DF. This could not be removed by the safety scanner.
Was hoping that OneCare might be able to remove it.

Steve -

Here's the outcome (eventually, all good!)
OneCare did not find any faults.

I started a service request through your first link. System failed to
download the diagnostic files <grumble grumble>

Then tried your second link and got live help. 'Den' suggested that I run
the safety scanner as it is the strongest tool they have. I said that I had
already run this and it was unable to clean it. Den asked what the system
problems were and I said that it was slow but mostly that the Automatic
Updates were Grayed out. He had me remove temporary files and reboot but as
expected, the AU update issue was still there.

At this point, we started a MS Easy Assist remote desktop program for him to
manually run tools.
I was not able to grasp the entire process but www.pcsafety.us was opened
and tools smithfraudfix.exe and dialafix.exe were run.

Total time in chat about 2 hours and AU is now showing a normal screen. I'll
run the online safety scanner tonight again before going home but all is
looking good.

Sorry that this is all the information I have to share on the recovery.
Hopefully, MS will get enough out of the session to include in another
malicious program remover update.

Thank you for your input and assistance,
Oppie

I forgot to mention that it was the MS PCSafety group that helped me out.
There was a lot of stuff going on but I believe that I got the free help as
a trial member of OneCare (I remember using my login information on one of
the help sites). That being the case, I just saved enough money on tech
support and unknown grief to pay for a subscription...

Now I have to find if Onecare supports Vista that I run at home so that I
can make that one the primary and my office computer a secondary. The Office
runs Trend Micro - OfficeScan which now has me wondering about it's
effectiveness. I run the officescan with Window defender and update daily
but still that pesky trojan got through.
