copying install hdd
xenobar <xenobar.3knh7d[ at ]DoNotSpam.com> 12/19/2008 4:21:16 AM
Hi. I'm not usre if I am posting this in the right section of the vista boards or not but....

I want to upgrade my hdd that I have Vista installed on. Is it possible to use xxcopy(or similar type software) and copy all files form my current install hdd to the hdd I want to replace it with?

I am trying to avoid having to re-install my OS, office, games, software, etc.

If xxcopy won't let me do this does anyone know of software I can get that will?

Thx. -- xenobar ------------------------------------------------------------------------ xenobar's Profile: http://forums.techarena.in/members/xenobar.htm View this thread: http://forums.techarena.in/vista-setup-install/1090069.htm http://forums.techarena.in

Acronis True Image will clone the disk for you and you can use it
after that to keep current backups so that you'll never have to worry
about it crashing and/or trashing. I've used through four version
updates - it's currently at ver. 2009 (but I'm holding fast at ver.
11)

Buy it at newegg.com to get the best price.

thx. I was hoping to get away with using xxcopy(cuz its free). I guess I could still try xxcopy 1st and if it doesn't work I'll have to get True Image.

I don't think newegg will ship to me here in Australia.
I see they do downloads for software but the exchange rate is a killer atm and I prefer to have a copy on disc just in case it goes bad. -- xenobar ------------------------------------------------------------------------ xenobar's Profile: http://forums.techarena.in/members/xenobar.htm View this thread: http://forums.techarena.in/vista-setup-install/1090074.htm http://forums.techarena.in

It's easy to burn it to disc. In fact, once installed there is an
option to make a bootable disc with the program on it.

Here's a link to a free cloning tool... it works slower than the "pro"
version but is otherwise not impaired:

I prefer to stick with Acronis True Image 2009
