server access
Michael 12/30/2008 9:09:01 AM
Our company is closed for the christmas vacation and I am trying to access
the server (the route I do this is logmein to my desktop and then remote
desktop to the server) - I have done this many times before without issue -
but this week after the SP2 update I am unable to access the server with my
usual credentials. I can ping the server I can browse the web BUT NOT the
company web or anything on the server -

A colleague (NON IT skills) went in and said that they could not log into
the server as a basic user (no admin rights) - they have links in my network
places to their folders - so childs play for them to find stuff and they were
not able to.

any ideas?
thanks

Sometimes reboots do not happen after updates. Have you tried to
reboot the server when someone is sitting in front of the server? I
had to do this this past weekend as my remote reboot did not happen.

See what SBS support is working on

Check your SBS with the SBS Best Practices Analyzer

As Jim says, you may need to reboot the server. To do a remote reboot of
the server from the workstation, at a command prompt:

shutdown \\<servername> /r /t:20

This command should restart the server after a wait of 20 seconds.

Or maybe...

An update to turn off default SNP features is available for Windows Server
2003-based and Small Business Server 2003-based computers
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/948496/

Installing, updating and running a scan with the SBS 2003 BPA may point to
things that need to be addressed:

Microsoft Windows Small Business Server 2003 Best Practices Analyzer
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=3874527a-de19-49bb-800f-352f3b6f2922&displaylang=en

Of course, either of these solutions is going to require access to the
server. However, you may be able to to remotely access the server's
registry and do the modifications described in KB 948496 (Method 3) above:

Remote (Network) Registry Editing in Windows XP
http://www.geocities.com/kilian0072002/registry/remote_reg.html

After you've modified the registry of the server, you should be able to
restart it from the workstation::

shutdown \\<servername> /r /t:20

If this is SBS 2003 have you tried RWW, and if so, why are you not still
using it? If you have not tried it, you should find it both easier and
cheaper than a paid third party subscription, particularly if, as it seems
from your post, there are several of your co workers also with
subscriptions. In this case it may or may not work depending on the present
condition of the server, but we have found that for the most part one can
RWW to ones desktop and to the repairs necessary without either being
physically present or using a third party solution.

Note that all of this depends on the present condition of the server. Your
only solution might be to go physically to the server and press hard plastic
buttons.

I have done this many times before without issue -
