wsus basic question
Trey 12/3/2008 5:12:06 PM
I just installed wsus and believe I have everything set correctly. If I go
to a workstation that is pointed at wsus and run live update in IE it still
goes to microsofts web site. Is this how it works or should that direct to
my wsus server?

This will always go to Microsoft's servers.

WSUS only affects the selection for Automatic updates.

You can check for correct operation in %WINDIR%\WindowsUpdate.log and on
the WSUS console.

One more question. If I go to http://mywsusserver should I see a type up
windows update page. Mine only has the default IIS page.

WSUS 3 has no web interface. I don't remember if WSUS 2 has a web interface
or not.

To force update, type the following in the Run box:
wuauclt.exe /detectnow

Vista gives you an option to check for updates on Microsoft servers or your
own WSUS.

It did not, except for the admin pages which were replaced by the MMC in WSUS 3

It forces a detection cycle which will do no more that it would do at the next
scheduled detection. It does not force updating. Only a small point but if
scheduled detection does not find update nor will the above command.
