How To Replace a Windows 2003 DNS Server?
mygposts[ at ]gmail.com 10/20/2008 9:26:31 PM
We are replacing a Domain Controller that was also a DNS server. We
created a new DC and that worked fine and we thought the DNS settings
would transfer easily, but when we started to add DNS to the new DC,
we got a wizard asking us to set up DNS again from scratch.
We would like have the both online during a transition period of
several dats while the clients get the new DNS server's address via
DHCP.

What's the easiest way to transfer a DNS server from one server to
another?

Hi there,

the DNS-zones are AD-integrated, right? If so, just go through the
installation wizard without creating zones. Wait for about 16 minutes and
refresh the view (F5). Then there should be the AD-integrated DNS-zones
appearing.

For non AD-integrated you have to create secondory zones.

For both types of DNS-zones you have to allow replication to the new
DNS-server in the properties of the original zones.

Cheers!

Hello mygposts[ at ]gmail.com,

Do you use AD integrated zones? Then you have just to wait for AD replication
and the zones will be there complete. The server settings you have to configure
yourself, Forwarders for example.

Also if you talk about replacing do not forget to move the 5 FSMO roles to
the new one and make it also Global catalog server before demoting the old
server. Do not just delete or switch off the old server, it has to be demoted
with dcpromo.

Best regards

We decided to just wait and it looked like it had just worked
automactically until we looked more carefully.

There were 5 zones and only 3 of the 5 were automatically created on
the new server after 24 hours.

How can we get the rest of the zones onto the new server?
