Vista vs Tablet [ Vista the Winner ]
"dee.cee.vee" <w.ever[ at ]w.ever.com> 10/12/2008 3:06:04 PM
For the longest time I was being stubborn and didn't want to give Vista a
chance. Mostly because I was so sure that the very best handwriting tool
was Tablet, and ONLY Tablet. I have the Fujitsu P-something Lifebook, 1610
or 1510. A small laptop, but not as small as the U series, which I owned
and sold - TOO SMALL. For sure, NOT a UMPC.

My next purchase was the HTC Shift .. Comes with Vista and also Windows
Mobile. The handwriting tool beats the heck out of Tablet - in my opinion.
It recognizes my handwriting without any mistakes -- 98% of the time I would
say. It has a problem with my lower case g's and my upper case I's ..
Handwriting is supposed to 'learn' how you write, but it is being stubborn
with those two letters or they are really sloppy, I am not sure which. I
love that you can go back after hitting insert, click on a word that is
wrong and all around the writing pad you are shown other word choices .. It
also shows you on the writing pad what word or words it is planning on
inserting ... Another great feature .. Tablet doesn't do that.

Since using Vista, I don't like using my Fujitsu Tablet as much as I used to
and find that I type on it more than I write. Also, I have to tap on the
write pad a few times before it realizes I am about to write on it. I think
that might be a setting like on the U series .. With the U series Fujitsu
you need to uncheck something that allows the touchpad to go to sleep to
save battery ... Maybe I should look into that. I can't remember where it
was that I made the chance on the U .. but it wasn't in the power settings.

I am much quicker at writing than typing and I make many more typos than I
do "writos." One thing I do like about my Fujitsu is that the screen itself
feels stronger, or harder than any other Tablet PC that I have used .. Maybe
that is my imagination, but it also has less glare .. not my imagination.

A few weeks ago I saw a touch screen monitor / computer system that I would
LOVE to have. A desktop system. Don't remember who makes it, but for me, I
do so much 'touch' computing that I pretty much resent it when I have to use
a mouse.

Perhaps the HP TouchSmart IQ505 PC?

Nice presentation... make sure your subwoofer is on and the volume is up
before you go there ;-)

If that's the one, might read the thread here "Mainstream Tablet?" as I
came close to buying one until I found that it had no video out options
plus several other limits contained in a sealed box.

Why don't you try Vista on your Fujitsu Tablet?
Does it not have enough resources?

After a longer time of hesitating I did bite the bullet and installed
Vista on my HP tc1100. Works perfect.

I had my eye on that Computer from the first day I saw it! In fact I
forwarded the ad to my boyfriend saying "my next Computer." But I don't
Know if I would like the reaching to touch. I spend most of my desktop
hours working on my eBay business. Getting used to it would Certainly Slow
me down . . . Not to mention the actual desk layout - there seems like A
ton of wasted space behind the monitor because it can't sit too far back
on the desk Unless you got a telescoping stylus. That space would (in my
case) become another Junk drawer.- that would collect mail, bank
statements, and misc. pieces of paper that I set to the side. . I am the
most unorganized Person I know.

With all that Said. I still want one!

Writing. not typing _ on my tablet laptop.. Please forgive the wrytos!

to tell the truth. I never thought of that. Seems I would need more ram
and maybe a bigger hard drive. I Keep thinking that the Fujitsu would be
the perfect Computer for my grand daughter, She's 10. . and I I save it to
her - that would be the perfect excuse to buy something new for myself. I
have my desktop, and the fustier is actually too Small sometimes. I hare my
HTC Shift which is probably the best portable -EVER thanks to the windows
mobile feature. My battery will sometimes last for days because-it can use
WinMo for checkIng email. What are people saying is the best full size
tablet?

1GB of RAM would be the minimum . 2GB might even be better. But with 1GB
and possible a USB-stick or an SD-card used for "ReadyBoost" would
provide very good performance. I currently have 1.5GB and it works
pretty good.

Honestly speaking: I can't say!!
The best one would be an updated HP tc1100 with Core 2 processor and the
like. But HP did not continue the product line of the "hybrids" :-( :-(

You don't have to use the screen... comes with wireless keyboard and
mouse and can be used the same as any other windows computer... even has
a keyboard light strip for the very thin keyboard.

From playing with it, think the touch features would work best when
standing with the computer on a wall or high counter... in my case was
looking at it as a media room computer but that eliminated itself from
contention since it has no video out capabilities.

I was at Best Buy yesterday -- and played around with that computer for a
short time, I found that the screen was very unresponsive to. my touch.
Maybe it just needed to be calibrated -or maybe not. .. . .

That's all for now. Gobble -Gobble everyone!
