Workstation gets updates but no record of machine reported in WSUS console
MyGposts <mygposts[ at ]gmail.com> 11/20/2008 6:12:01 PM
There is an XP machine that I know is communicating with WSUS because
it got all the updates and it shows communication logged in the local
windowsupdate.log file, but when I go to the Update Services console
and search for the machine, there is no record of it.
I searched for the name. I went to the vew of All Computers, Status,
Any and set them in alphabetical order and by IP address and it isn't
there anywhere.
What could cause this?

Could be a cloned machine? Is it a virtual machine that you copy/paste?

Cheers

No. There reason seems to be because the last machine that had that
IP address was still listed in DNS.
I manually deleted the old machine's entry from DNS hours ago, but the
new machine still hasn't appeared in the WSUS console even after
refreshing the view.
The old machine that used to have that IP address is still listed in
WSUS with an icon saying "This computer has not reported status ion 13
or more days."

How long should it take for WSUS to clean up old machines and update
with new machines?

No, I don't think so; that shouldn't cause any problems. WSUS uses the machine
name as reported by the client, not the IP address.

If the old machine is no longer on the network, that is to be expected. If you
don't want that machine's listing any more, you'll have to delete it.

Look in WindowsUpdate.log on the affected client and doublecheck that it is
talking to your WSUS machine, not somewhere else. If you aren't sure, post the
last fifty or so lines here.

WSUS has no way to tell that the information about the old machine is no longer
wanted, so it will remain until you delete it.

New machines reporting into WSUS should appear on the console within a few
hours. If a machine reported in more than a day ago and still isn't appearing
this indicates a problem.

As Augusto pointed out, if the machine is cloned this could be causing the problem.

Harry.
