*Advise needed* Changing a SBS2000 to Win2003 ENT
tasii 12/25/2008 9:41:00 AM
Hi all,

Here's my predicament. I inherited a Win 2000 SBS domain when I started my
current job. SBS limitations are plenty (no other DC's etc.), so I need to
move on to 'real flavors' of Windows server, specifically 2003 ent.

The MS prescribed method of accomplishing this goal basically calls for
upgrading from SBS 2000 to SBS 2003, and then buying a software conversion
package from MS to facillitate the migration from SBS to 'regular' versions.

I don't trust that for one, and for two the the Active Directory strructure
is minimal. Ergo I don't mind losing the existing layout.

It's for this reason I want to recreate the domain from scratch.

The problem I am struggling with is, with 40+ workstaions, what will be the
easiest transistion? Can I reuse the Domain name? Will that not cause SID
issues?

My ultimate goal is to have all worstations retain their layout and personal
preferences, without having to setup new accounts on the new server.

I am thinking that re-using the 'old' domain name will create SID issues, am
I wrong?

I really need to have the workstations retain their personal
preferences/desktops etc.

Has anyone ever been up against this before?
All and ANY guidance wiill be greatly appreciayrf!

Hello tasii,

Did you read this one:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/555073

And you can add additional 2000/2003 DC's to a SBS domain, they can just
not hold the FSMO roles.

Best regards
