You won't be able to use RD to reinstall the operating system - that would
be like asking Windows to commit suicide. If you run Windows in a virtual
machine and have remote access to the host, this isn't difficult.

I was thinking to do a installation of windows server 2008 with the help of
unattended.txt ? for exemple i can create a bootable CD-rom (or bootable usb
key), put windows server 2008 in it, configure it to not ask anything during
the install process (with the help of unattended.txt) and send the cdrom to
the Datacenter asking the guy to put the cdrom in the server and boot from
it ... what do you thing of it ?

thanks again by advance for you help

I've never done an unattended installation....but AFAIK that should work
fine.

Re: how to install remotely windows server 2008
"Danny Sanders" <DSanders[ at ]NOSPAMciber.com> 12/23/2008 8:29:21 PM
ILO 2 is a HP utility that will allow you to remotely view and interact with
the POST. You could send the media to the Data Center and have them put it
in the server and you can use ILO 2 to reboot and install the server as if
you were sitting in front of it.

To tell you the truth you should have something similar on all your servers,
especially if they are in a remote Data Center. It can save you a lot of
calls or trips to the data center.

We ONLY have HP servers at our remote Data center because we can get to them
using ILO and do anything as if we were sitting in front of the server.
See:
http://docs.hp.com/en/5991-6024/index.html

If you don't have HP servers you might check to see if your server hardware
has something similar.

Performing an unattended installation
For information about performing an unattended installation, see the Windows
Vista Deployment Step-by-Step Guide
(http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkID=66066).

For additional information about unattended installation of Windows Server
2008, see the Windows Server 2008 Windows Automated Installation Kit User's
Guide (Waik.chm).

I'm not familiar with doing it that way so I can't comment.

but did unattended installation can be performed on the main partition (i
have only one partition and one hard drive on the computer).
can i launch the unattended installation from the already installed windows
server 2008 that i want to erase (throught the remote desktop) ? did
everything will be done automatiquely (ie: reboot, repartitionning,
formatting etc...)

thanks by advance !

It sounds pretty reasonable to do the trick, but I'd test locally on a
workstation before committing, otherwise you may be out a fair amount of
time if something goes wrong.

For local testing on a workstation turn off the monitor and walk away,
pretend you're 100% remote, see what happens.

Thanks a lot devils,

i will try on a workstation before. do you thing i can do it without the
cd-rom ? (ie without even asking the datacenter to put a cd-rom in our
cd-rom drive)
because if i put the file on the windows 2008 main partition and i ask in
the unattended.txt to repartition the harddrive how it will be ?

what i want is to do a automatique windows 2008 installation without any
help from the datacenter

thanks you by advance
stéphane

I doubt you can do it without an installation DVD in the drive, but I've
honestly never tried to install an OS like that.

If 2008 can install from a hard drive to another drive, and if you can
manage to get a boot loader that will start the unintended install from
that drive, you might survive.

This was definitely possible in the 2003 and previous days since the
installer could be launched from DOS (real DOS, not a Windows command
prompt), but I somewhat doubt that the 2008 DVD will manage to boot
successfully if copied to a hard drive, WinPE just isn't made to do that
out of the box.

Now if you have an OS that can be upgraded to 2008 rather then trying to
do a clean install you MIGHT have better luck, although I've honestly
never even upgraded a server's OS, I have no idea if this could be made
to work, and if so, what sort of mess would be left.

Grab yourself a virtual machine product (Virtual PC will do nicely) and
play, you're in uncharted territory here.
