PTR-Records without FQDN t.tilgner 11/11/2008 10:26:05 PM hi, we have in our reverse zone some ptr-records without fqdn. there is only the ip and the hostname listed. all entries where updated automatically. how can i configure the dns server so that only ptr-records with fqdn are accepted? we use windows 2003 r2 with all patches. greets, tobi

This is derived from the Primary DNS Suffix. You can select Secure Updates only, but that will only allow a machine that is joined to an AD domain in the forest or trusted forest/domains to update using machine authentication based merely it has an account created in a domain in the trusted infrastrucure. So for the most part, a joined machine would have a Primary DNS Suffix unless it was removed or changed manually. So if a machine is joined and for some reason the Primary DNS Suffix is missing, it will still register without an FQDN. Ace
