Hello, We currently have an NT Domain that we need to migrate to Active Directory. We also have a Novell environment which hosts the DNS for the organizationand a few File shares. I am quite comfortable with the NT to WIN2K3 migration of the user accounts and groups but I need help with the migration of the DNS environment from Novell to AD. I have looked at MSDSS but there was no explicit information about migrating DNS. This has become a show stopper for us and any help will be greatly appreciated in this regard.
Thanks

I don't now your environment but have you considered leaving the Novell DNS server alone and just having your AD DNS servers use the Novell DNS server as a forwarder?

There are several ways to configure DNS. As there are several methods (migrate vs. upgrade) from NT domain to W2K3. to Migrate from NT.
Are you intending to install AD (Active Directory) at the same time as you migrate from NT? If you intend to run AD I suggest that you do not, at least not until you make the transition
Are you running Exchange? What version (5.5 w/ SP's)
The simplest way to move DNS, is to make the W2K3 server a secondary to the the Novell DNS server, this will allow all records to populate the W2K3 server, then convert it to Primary for your new domain. I'm pretty certain this method is detailed in one of KB articles. Once you are are sure what you intend to do and the vision of the domain once complete, its not that hard to configure DNS, DHCP, WINs. In the migrations I have completed, I always use Microsoft as the SOA for its domain and use forwarder to contact everything else. (again, there are always exceptions based on final configuration of your network (LAN as well as WAN).

Hello Danny, Thanks for your response. What we are looking at is to eventually shut down the Novell environment as those servers will soon be out of warranty. I just wanted to know how to sync my two environments and when I'm sure we are okay, get the other servers to jion the AD enviroment and proceed with the rest of the migration. How do I get the Novell environment (DNS) to update the Active Directory intergrated DNS?
Thanks.

Hello Beoweolf, Thanks for the response. At this time we are not running exchange. We are on Lotus Notes. (However we may convert to exchange later if they change their minds. That's why I am using WIN2K3 R2.) I understand the path quite clearly from NT to WIN2K3 but I do not know Novell enough to know how to create my environment as a secondary to it. (I inherited this scenario) That's where I'm looking for specific help either in terms of articles or commands or tools. We do hope to shut down the Novell environment as soon as AD is up.

I don't think there is even a such thing as "mirgrating" DNS (whether Novell or not Novell). With DNS you setup Zone Transfers to "copy" the Zone from one DNS to another. Then when everything is finished copying you can dissolve the Zone Transfer and change the TCP/IP specs of the Hosts to use the new DNS.
With two AD/DNS's it is even simpler because AD automatically replicates the DNS.

You can copy the DNS contents using Zone Transfers and you won't have to worry about primary/secondary stuff. See my other post.

You are correct...it is technically called a transfer. With my first upgrade fron heterogeneous Novell/NT network back in the last century I held onto Bind and static IP addressing (out of political considerations) as well as the Unix mafia being incensed at Microsoft for daring to offer an alternative. With AD-integration and the general trend toward a system wide MS solution, there is no need for building a Hodgepodge network.
However, I do agree with re-purposing an obsolete box to host a secure, sacrificial, internet facing, low cost external DNS appliance. but for internal network, you can hardly beat AD-integrated DDNS/DDHCP.
