I ran into a problem once like yours.
I had upgraded a computer from XP to Vista. It turns out that what XP had placed in System Volume Information prior to the upgrade had prevented me from doing as I have stated in my previous post. I formatted the partition to get rid of SVI and started anew with that particular drive (after copying everything I wanted to save to an external hard drive, of course). It only took me about 45 minutes and was painless.
