Create a test group of servers (development servers) and test computers. Use
WSUS to apply the patches to the test group first. Test the development
servers and the test group of computers to make sure the patch does not
break anything before applying it to the production servers and the rest of
the computers.

Of course for this to work you have to have development servers that are set
up the same as the production servers.

I've a few posts about common best practices and first configurations on
WSUS:

http://blog.augustoalvarez.com.ar/2008/12/12/wsus-30-deployment-and-first-configurations-part-i/
http://blog.augustoalvarez.com.ar/2008/12/12/wsus-30-deployment-and-first-configurations-part-ii/

Hope it helps

Cheers

Setup a Virtual setup of test servers?

What you want to do is test the patches before you apply them to production.
If you don't have test servers you can use, I would look through these news
groups soon after patch release Tuesday and check to see if others are
having problems with the patches and how they recovered from them.
It's not ideal, you can still have problems.

I would strongly suggest using Virtual server to host a virtual copy of your
most important servers for testing.
