DNS
Pat 11/12/2008 7:43:03 PM
Hello,
We are running AD intergrated DNS 2003 server and all the client computers
are manualy configured to point to the DNS servers. We are in the process of
refreshing some of the desktop computers (over 1000). We do not have
scavenging enabled and the old records are not set to automaticaly delete.
The problem is that the new machines come in and have a diffrent NetBios name
but the same IP address.
The System administrator said he does not enable scavenging because member
servers disapear out of DNS when it's enabled. has anyone ever seen this
before?

Do you have any sugestions on how we can clean up DNS?

Thanks in advance

Hello Pat,

I saw this only when the time frame was to short for deleting the older records.
Only some hours.

Best regards

You may want to consider DHCP for workstations. You really should not
create a situtation where it actually matters what IP#s the workstaitons
have. Only Servers, Utility machines, and networking devices should be
static. Printers can be static or DHCP Reserved.

If you want to know at any moment what IP and workstation has you can
quickly look it up in the DHCP Service.

Thanks for the quick response.
unfortunatley DHCP is not an option in our enviorment all computers need
static IPs

Re: DNS

I noticed that on some of the member servers and Domain controllers that if
I look at the record properties some are checked to delete this record when
it becomes stale and some are not checked. Shouldn't all servers be set the
same? and if so which one is it checked are non checked.
