DNS Setup - dcpromo doesn't see static ip
MichaelG 10/10/2008 11:25:01 AM
I'm in the same boat as the previous poster. I'm a software developer not
sysadmin and need to set up a 'corporate lan' for development and testing.

I've installed Windows Server 2008 and configured the machine with a static
ip as follows:-
(This is for the onboard network adapter - there are no addin cards at all.)
IP Address: 192.168.0.10
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway: 192.168.0.1 - Netgear DG834N ip

The Netgear is running DCHP. There is one computer on the LAN which will not
be part of the domain but needs to access the internet.

I now need to make the server the Primary Domain Controller. I've added the
Active Directory Domain Services role and run dcpromo.exe to add the DNS
server. However, it tells me I have not configured TCP/IP correctly and that
none of my network adapters has a valid IP address.

What's going on? It refuses to believe I've given it a static IP address.
I've tried running the complete installation again (fresh full install) but
same problem.

Would appreciate any help.
Thanks

Michael

Hello MichaelG,

Set als o the preferred DNS server on the NIC to it's own ip address, 192.168.0.10.

For DHCP i recommend that you switch it off on the router and use the server
for it. Use the router only as default gateway, for nothing else. If DNS
is installed configure under the FORWARDERS tab on the DNS server properties
in the DNS management console the ip address of your ISP's DNS server. Domain
internal use for all machines only the domain DNS server, in your case 192.168.0.10

Best regards

Hi Meinolf,

Thanks for the reply.

I already had the DNS Server set to ther server's IP, 192.168.0.10. I've
switched off DCHP on the router and also tried with the server disconnected
from the LAN and restarted the server.
I still get a dialog 'This computer has dynamically assigned IP addres(es)'

ipconfig reports my one ethernet controller with ip address, mask and
gateway as stated. It also reports two 'Tunnel Adapter Local Area
Connection *8' and '*9' with Media State .... Media Disconnected.

Has got anything to do with anything?

Is there any way to find out what it thinks has a dynamically assigned
address?

Thanks
Michael

Disable the IPv6 and see if that helps

Right Click Network Places
Select Manage Network Connections For each enabled and used NIC
Right Click - Local Area Connection - Select Properties
Networking Tab
DeSelect IPv6
Close

There are no NIC's on the server apart from the onboard Realtek chip. Also
tried connecting to the Netgear directly.

This is what ipconfig /all reports:-

Does it offer any clues? What are the Tunneling adapters?

Thanks
Michael
