DNS server and ICS conflict on 2k3 server
Harmjan Olthoff 10/2/2008 9:24:01 AM
I think I have a quite common problem but cannot seem to fix this...

I run a 2k3 server with DNS, DHCP and AD.
I have 4 client computers who contact this server directly.

The server has 2 NIC's, one for the internal network, set on 192.168.0.1
The other nic is automatic and goes to my ISP.
the second nic has ICS enabled.

at start this works quite good but afer a few hours the internet connection
is lost throughout the whole network (including the server) and the server
cannot be contacted from an external connection.
All internal connections work fine.

Also when running IPconfig on the server everything seems to be fine but no
internet.

I have read about conflicts between ICS and DNS servers but I need my DNS
server for GPO's.
It has worked perfectly fine before but since I installed the new server
this problem keeps getting back and I can't seem to find the problem.

I hope this is a common problem and maby someone can answer this quite easily.
Im not that good with this kind of configurations...

Many thanx

Hello Harmjan,

You have choosen the badest option for configuring a DC. Multihoming creates
lot's of problems. Also ICS on a DC is not optimal. Disable it.
Connect all machines to a switch and also the server with only one NIC or
use teaming if it is supported form the hardware vendor. Then connect the
switch to the router. The other NIC of the DC disable. Then configure the
FORWARDERS tab under the DNS server properties in the DNS management console
to the ISP's DNS server.

Best regards
