DNS issues
TaylorGaffney <taylor.gaffney[ at ]gmail.com> 12/11/2008 5:20:28 PM
First of all we have just integrated 3 Server 2008 boxes in our
domain. We are currently running on 2000 domain level and 2000 domain
controller. I have dcpromo a 2008 box as a DC. We are currently
running fine as a DC, the problem is with DNS. I am not quite sure I
am making sense but this is the situation.

1. FSMO roles

Schema master - 2008 DC box
Domain name master - 2000 DC box
PDC - 2008 DC box
RID pool manager - 2008 DC box
Infrastructure manager - 2000 DC box

2. I am not sure if active directory is replicating right from 2000 to
2008, but works fine from 2008 to 2000. If that makes any sense?

3. I need to have DNS working on both 2000 and 2008 DC at the same
time, so I can eventually start moving off the 2000 DC box.

I just need to know what is the proper way of achieving this or am I
doing this all wrong?

thanks.

What make you think its not replicating properly? Are there any logs in the
event viewer, paticularly in the directory service event logs on all dc's.
I would transfer the remaining roles to the 2008 server as well, is the 2008
dc also a global catalog server?
James.

I just check and it is replicating fine.

I am afraid of transferring the roles at this time due to DNS
really.

The 2008 box is a DC and GC.

Hello TaylorGaffney,

1. move all FSMO roles to the 2008 DC

2. to check replication run "repadmin /showrepl" in a command prompt without
the quotes. Also you can install the server 2000 support\tools\suptools.msi
from the installation disk to run replmon.exe and have a GUI overview. On
the 2008 install the support tools from 2003 (you can ignore the error message,
it will install and work fine)

2003 Support tools:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=96A35011-FD83-419D-939B-9A772EA2DF90&displaylang=en

3. for DNS use AD integrated zones, if on the 2008 DNS is not installed yet
change to AD integ. zones on the 2000 and then install DNS on the 2008, make
sure the preferred NIC is only using the 2000 DNS server, wait min. 15 minutes
for replication. If all zones replicated change preferred to itself and secondary
to the other.

Best regards

Meinolf Weber

I agree with Meinolf. All roles must be moved to the latest operating system
in any domain/forest with DCs of mixed operating systems. I would also
suggest to only use DNS on the 2008 machines. Simply uninstall DNS on the
2000 machines. Note: DO NOT DELETE the zone on the 2000 machines, just
uninstall DNS. If you delete the zone, it will remove the zone from AD.

1. I cannot move all FSMO rolls to the 2008 DC because we still have a
DC that is 2000.
- Should I move the infrastructure role over now? What are the
consequences?
- Cannot move Domain Naming due to the 2000 DC.

2. I checked the repadmin tool out it is replicating successfully
between the 2008 and 2000 DC.

3. If I do uninstall the DNS on 2000 DC, what affect will that have on
the users that use that 2000 DC as its gateway and DNS server. There
really is no way of testing this out without affecting users in
production.

What functional mode is the domain and forest in?
