DNS Redirect sub domains, top level domains, and folder structure
jacatching[ at ]comcast.net 10/20/2008 5:26:28 PM
I am not a systems engineer. However, I have been tasked to conduct
some research, so please be patient with my lack of knowledge of DNS
servers and the way they work.

1. We have an internal(intranet) webserver shared by several
departments
2. My department owns several applications that sit on the shared web
server.
3. The company wants to eventually EOL the existing server including
the subdomain and have a dedicated server for each department.
4. We must move our apps to our new server NOW - several months before
the planned EOL - and do it without breaking existing links on the
intranet that link into our apps.

e.g. http://alldepartments.company.com/mydepartement/news.aspx?article=1

My understanding is that it is impossible to redirect HTTP requests at
the DNS level using folders i.e.
http://alldepartments.company.com/mydepartement/news.aspx?article=1
and redirect the request to http://mydepartment.company.com/newsgroup/news.aspx?article=1

So, my question: Is it possible to redirect at the DNS level the top
level domain and sub domain portion? Meaning, can an HTTP request of
http://alldepartments.company.com/ be redirected to http://mydepartment.company.com

If so, by migrating the app to the new server and keeping the folder
structure the same wouldn't it maintain the integrity of the links and
resolve the HTTP requests to the new server? Example:
http://alldepartments.company.com/mydepartement/news.aspx?article=1
and redirect the request to http://mydepartment.company.com//mydepartement/news.aspx?article=1

Unfortunately, the departments have to migrate the apps in stages and
therefore we are all running into this problem.

Any suggestions or comments are welcomed and appreciated. Thanks in
advance.

Hello jacatching[ at ]comcast.net,
You are changing two pieces of your url:

1) The server name
Old = alldepartments
New = mydepartment

2) The root folder
Old = mydepartment
New = newsgroup

1 - If you wanted to change the server name that is simple, just use an DNS
alias record

2 - If you want to change the root folder then you will probably have to
put in some type of a url redirect within an html page. I'm guessing though
that you have multiple pages here and a redirect is probably not possible.
There is probably some html trick to do this but this really is outside
of the scope of this DNS newsgroup and would suggest you repost (Cross post)
in a web development Newsgroup.
