Cluster upgrade x86 to x64
HectorITNT <HectorITNT.3kvqfb[ at ]DoNotSpam.com> 12/23/2008 4:12:38 PM
Hi!

I'm planning to upgrade my windows 2003 file cluster by adding a x64 node to my current 2-x86 node cluster, rmoving one of the x86 nodes and recreating it as a x654 to be added again. Then remove the x86 node and leave only the two x64 nodes.

What should I consider and where should I invest the bulk of my time during this process? Im experiencing some resource issues and hope to get better memory and network useage with the x64 OS.

Any comments are appreciated. -- HectorITNT ------------------------------------------------------------------------ HectorITNT's Profile: http://forums.techarena.in/members/hectoritnt.htm View this thread: http://forums.techarena.in/server-cluster/1092219.htm http://forums.techarena.in

I don't know if it's possible at all to mix different OSes in the same
cluster, but I would be quite surprised if it was...

Anyway, if you're using 32-bit applications, you're not going to get much
from a 64-bit OS.

It is just a File server. Nothing but shares. -- HectorITNT ------------------------------------------------------------------------ HectorITNT's Profile: http://forums.techarena.in/members/hectoritnt.htm View this thread: http://forums.techarena.in/server-cluster/1092220.htm http://forums.techarena.in

But I stil don't think you can mix 32-bit and 64-bit nodes in the same
cluster...

Sorry, you can't do that. You can't intermix 32-bit and 64-bit in the same
cluster.

Windows 2008 has a migration wizard to help you migrate
applications/services from a 32-bit cluster to a 64-bit cluster.

Then the migration wizard is the perfect way to go. Yes, you will see some
dramatic improvements as 2008 uses a file server resource instead of file
share resources, so you can perform better consolidation.

Good luck, have fun, and enjoy the Holidays.
