WSUS 3.0 SP1 and SQL Server 2008
Mike Morris 11/25/2008 7:11:00 AM
All the WSUS docs refer to SQL Server 2005 SP1. Is WSUS 3.0 SP1 supported on
SQL Server 2008 on Windows Server 2008? I can't find a definitive answer and
hope to receive one here. Thanks for your help.

Yes SQL Server 2008 is supported,

check overview please.

The WSUS 3.0 SP1 docs *do* refer to Windows Server 2008. To use Windows
Server 2008 you must have SQL Server 2005 SP2. If you're not finding
references to Windows Server 2008, you might want to check that you actually
have the WSUS v3 documentation (instead of the WSUS v2 documentation).

Thank you for your response. I saw this page, but was unclear as to whether
the SQL Server 2008 reference meant that WSUS supports UPDATES to SQL Server
2008 or whether it RUNS on SQL Server 2008. Can you please clarify? Thanks.

Thank you, Lawrence, for your response. Yes, I did see the information you
reference, but I hoped that there was newer guidance and support for WSUS 3.0
SP1 USING SQL Server 2008 now that it is released. Sadly, it seems that only
SCVMM 2008 (not SCOM 2007 SP1, SCCM 2007 R2, or WSUS 3.0 SP1) currently
supports the USE of SQL Server 2008. Thanks again for your help.

No, there isn't. As you might expect, since the build date of WSUS 3.0 SP1
precedes the Release Date of SQL Server 2005, there's no practical way that
the WSUS 3.0 SP1 build could have any awareness of a product not yet in
production.

SCVMM 2008 has a build date after the GA of SQL Server 2008, thus the
ability to build SCVMM 2008 to the specs of production level code.

Now, having said all of that... since, apparently, you real question was
about the ability to use SQL Server 2008,
let's talk about the basic ability of SQL Server 2008 to host SQL Server
2005 databases,
just like SQL Server 2005 was able to host SQL Server 2000 databases,
just like SQL Server 2000 was able to host SQL Server 7 databases,
just like SQL Server 7 was able to host SQL Server 6.5 databases....

see my point? :-)

Since the dawn of time SQL Server has supported "backward compatibility" of
databases in the newer environment.

Currently, I do not know of any reason why WSUS 3.0 SP1 will not work on a
SQL Server 2008 database server.

Re: WSUS 3.0 SP1 and SQL Server 2008
Mike Morris 11/26/2008 11:14:11 PM
Thanks so much for your insights. I thought of the build date issue, but
hoped that Microsoft would have done the testing of WSUS 3.0 SP1 (and the SC
products) with SQL Server 2008, found that it worked, and simply updated the
documentation to include references to SQL Server 2008. Your comments
regarding backward compatibility give me enough assurance that I'll move
forward testing WSUS 3.0 SP1 with SQL Server 2008. I was leary of spending
the time if someone had already done this and found that it did not work.
Thanks again for your help.
