Hi Folks;
I had WSUS installed on the network and recently removed it. I had previously configured the active directory on the domain controller to point the domain clients to the WSUS machine by means of the WUA administrative template.
I then deleted the Windows Update template thinking the network would then go back to getting it's updates directly from Microsoft - but they're not
I've double-checked the active directory on the domain controller and the Windows Update template I added is not showing. I also ran secedit /refreshpolicy machine_policy on all the clients (they are almost all Windows 2000 machines) yet I still see errors in the event viewer about not being able to connect to Windows Update.
Does anyone know what would cause this? I thought that once the Windows Update admin template was removed from AD the client machines would go back to Microsoft...
Thanks! Dave

Did you check the registry settings on any of the clients?

Hi Tom;
Thank you for the reply! I did not create registry entries on any of the machines (I only used an AD entry) but I thought I would check, and sure enough, the machines do have a registry entry pointing them to the now missing WSUS server.
Thanks very much - I'd have to say that will case it :-)
Best; Dave

When retiring WSUS, and the desire is to revert clients back to using Automatic Updates (via microsoft.com), what you need to do is explicitly set the "Specify intranet Microsoft update services location" to DISABLED, and ensure that new policy is propagated to all clients.
This will then set the registry value "UseWUServer" to dword:0x0 (disabled), which will then force the WUA to query microsoft.com, rather than trying to find a local WSUS Server.
