How do I tell if Pre-Staging is working during initial replication
Elijah Taylor <pitpawten[ at ]gmail.com> 10/13/2008 7:41:50 PM
I am pre-staging a new DFS target (DFS-T2) before adding it to the
replication. I do this by copying the files from the already existing
DFS target (DFS-T1) using 'xcoyp /o' (in order to speed up initial
replication, and save on network bandwidth)

Once replication is enabled for DFS-T2, everything in the folder is
moved to the 'NtFrs_PreExisting___See_EventLog' folder, and then slowly
shows up back in the actual target folder.

Once initial replication is complete, all the files are now in DFS-T2,
but they are also still in the 'preexisting' folder.

1. Should the files even get moved to the 'preexisting' folder if I have
correctly pre-staged the new link?

2. How can I easily tell if the files are being copied from the
preexisting folder as opposed to getting copied from DFS-T1 (via the
network) during initial replication? (without trying to monitor networ
traffic)

Thanks.

Is this FRS replication or DFS Replication with R2?
To pre-stage with FRS: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/266679

Anthony,

This is indeed FRS replication on a Windows 2K Server, thanks for the link.

I briefly looked at it, and it looks like the real benefits of
pre-staging are for the 3rd and subsequent targets that get added to a
link as FRS will still be the mechanism for transferring the files
initial replication of the 2nd link. Am I reading that correctly?

Thanks again.

Elijah, yes, you have to have a replica in order to pre-stage it on another
server. You need to use a backup process to obtain the copy,

Re: How do I tell if Pre-Staging is working during initial replica
Ian Miller 12/12/2008 3:26:00 PM
I have attempted the following technique for pre-staging data without
success.

I have a portable server (a VM actually) set up as a replication partner
with two primary servers in different locations. I suspend the connection
between the two primary servers, enable the connection between Primary A and
the portable, add the data and let the replication settle out. Then I move
the portable server to the second site and enable replication between Primary
B and the portable and let that replication settle out. Finally, I reenable
replication between Primary A and Primary B, hoping that it will settle out
without recopying all the data. Yet, all the data gets copied anyway or at
least the network traffic generate is sufficient to copy all the data.

Can you spot why it isn't working?
