Wait for the client to detect what updates it needs. Then approve only those that are needed. First check that the updates are not superceded though. If you allow several update cycles to run on a test client by running wuauclt /detectnow then clicking the shield to install the detected update and repeating this until no more updates are detected it does not take too long. Even if you mistakenly approve the odd superceded update it's not a big deal as the content will get removed sooner or later by the normal housekeeping of the WSUS cleanup wizard.
